Essie Washington Sociology Culture Stage 3 – Learning Plan DIFFERENTIATION (I-3) SCAFFOLD: ACCELERATE: GROUP: Re-teach Learning Activities: Day 1 02/10/14 Learning Activities: Objective: Differentiate between ethnocentrism and cultural relativism Warm Up: What do the terms ethnocentrism and cultural relativism mean? Activity: Review with students the term ethnocentrism and cultural relativism. Students will write an essay in response to the following questions: Should U.S citizens be allowed to perform traditional cultural practices that violate a state or federal law? What general guidelines might be used to decide the issue on a case-bycase basis? Students will share their essay with class. Homework: find old magazines and create a collage that illustrates each of the five aspects of American Culture.(technology, symbols, language, values and norms) Day 2: 02/11/14 Objective: Categorize factors that account for variations among and within cultures. Warm-Up: What are the basic values that form traditional American Values? Activity: Discuss subculture and counterculture. Students will get in group of 2 and read handout about the different counterculture groups and then together write a short research paper on the group. Class discussion on essays. Day 3 02/12/14 Objective: Analyze how new values developed in the United States after 1970 have changed the country’s culture. Warm-Up: How have American values changed?
