Assistant Hall Director Position Description
The Office of Housing & Residential Life Office at Montana State University Billings is currently
seeking applicants for the position of Assistant Hall Director. This temporary, semi-professional position
is being created to assist current housing staff with duties and responsibilities in a variety of areas. The
position is a non-renewable (must reapply after term), 9 month appointment and is intended for postbaccalaureate practical experience in the area of student affairs, specifically housing and residence life.
The Assistant Hall Director position will advance skills such as administrative responsibilities,
responding to crisis situations, conducting student judicial meetings, and selecting and training student
staff. Remuneration for this position is in the form of room and board (apartment style living and meal
plan), as well as a stipend coordinated with the university pay schedule.
Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree and at least 2 years of residence life/student life experience required. The preferred
candidate has been a Resident Advisor or student leader, is familiar with residence hall living,
understands the challenges of living where you work, and is looking for a life-changing experience. The
Assistant Hall Director is permitted to take graduate level classes, but it is not required for employment.
Principal Accountabilities:
1. In consultation with, and under the direction of the Assistant Director, supervise and coordinate the
staffing and operation of residence hall desk area(s) to include:
 Selecting, training, scheduling, supervising and evaluating student Desk Workers & Nightwatch
staff
 Training Resident Assistant staff on desk procedures
 Equipment check-out procedures
 Overseeing payroll and other record-keeping responsibilities for Desk staff
 Maintaining all supplies and forms, cleaning desk, checking for schedule changes, filling open
shifts
 Initiating requests for replacement of equipment and supplies
 Coordinating desk staff to provide administrative support to the Hall Director as needed
 Meeting as needed with Desk staff to ensure smooth operation of the desk
2. Assist the Hall Directors with building management, to include:
 Opening and closing hall preparation
 Check in/out and room change processes
 Reporting damages and needed repairs in a timely manner
 Student room key management, including maintenance of key inventories, replacement of lost
keys within 48 hours, notify students of pending key changes, communicating with the housing
office, etc.
 Coordinating desk and University Police lock-out key logs, including Event Slips
3. Assist the Hall Directors in tasks related to student conduct, beginning Fall Semester:
 Adjudicating low-level conduct meetings, and managing concurrent administrative
responsibilities
 Keeping Hall Directors informed of conduct actions taken
 Assisting with maintaining proper conduct database record keeping
4. In consultation with the Advisor, serve in an advisory capacity to the Residence Hall Association, this
may include:
 Meeting weekly with the Executive Council
 Meeting as needed with other RHA Officers
 Coordinating and advising weekly executive board meetings
 Attending all RHA meetings
 Attending and supporting RHA programs and events
5. Assist the University Housing department with marketing and student retention initiatives.
6. May participate in the Housing Staff Selection Committee.
7. Assist with the management and supervision of Resident Assistant educational efforts, and serve as a
resource for the RAs.
8. Assist the Hall Director in supervision of Resident Assistant staff to include:
 Maintaining ongoing contact with the Resident Assistant staff
 Providing feedback for, and/or assisting the Hall Director with performance evaluations of
Resident Assistant staff
 Meeting individually with each Resident Assistants at least once per semester
9. Participate in the implementation of fall training as well as on-going training and development for the
Resident Assistant staff.
10. Manage “on duty” and “rove” schedule for Resident Assistant staff.
11. Maintain ongoing contact throughout the year with the Office of Community Involvement, regarding
planning and implementation of centralized training and programming related to service learning,
diversity, and leadership initiatives.
12. Attend ongoing in-service opportunities for paraprofessional staff as directed by supervisor.
13. Assume responsibilities of the Hall Director in her/his absence. Responsibilities may include:
 Maintenance call outs, planning and facilitating staff meetings, coordinating crisis management,
overseeing check-outs, etc.
14. Provide initial peer counseling, crisis management, and referral for students, as needed.
15. Maintain ongoing communication with Assistant Director, Hall Directors and Resident Assistant staff.
16. Other duties as assigned by the Senior Housing Staff (Director, Assistant Director, Hall Director,
Operations Manager).
Supervision Received:
Immediate supervision is received from the Assistant Director of University Housing. General
supervision is received from the Petro Hall Director.
Co-Supervision Exercised:
Approximately 18 part-time paraprofessional Resident Assistants. 1-10 student desk worker staff.
