Job Purpose
Carry out works expediently and economically to the City’s specified standard within the
Department’s constraints as directed by the Litter Control/Cleansing Leading Hand’s general
directions to maximise the works benefit to the community.
2.
Organisational Context
The position of Litter Control / Cleansing Officer is part of the Waste & Energy Services
department within the Infrastructure Services directorate. In total, 5 departments report to the
Infrastructure Services Director. Other departments include Fleet Services, Project Design &
Delivery, Infrastructure Maintenance & Renewals and Infrastructure Planning & Asset
Management.

Key Accountabilities

Responsible for maintaining facilities, daily service of rubbish receptacles, and
providing a tidy rubbish environment within the City District.

Assist in the removal of litter free and debris from reported “black spot” litter areas,
city verges, median strips, parks, sporting grounds and any other public areas.

Hygiene duties / public ablution cleaning and other sanitation duties.

Cleaning duties including - Graffiti removal, cleaning of playground equipment, public
barbecues, fish cleaning stations, pressure cleaning and sweeping of footpaths within
the CBD.

Minor parks maintenance duties.

Pick up and disposal of sharps and carcass removal whenever required.

Install, secure and remove rubbish or litter bins before and after special events.

Install, maintain and replace litterbins, and upkeep records of stock.

Delivery of purchased bins to ratepayers and maintenance of existing hire city bins.

Assist in keeping the Litter Control/Cleansing works depot area neat, tidy and rubbish
free.

Undertake any other responsibilities within the Litter Control/Cleansing team’s work
scope.

Be able to participate in the weekend and public holiday roster and work as part of a
team.

Expected to use initiative to clarify expectations, ask questions where unsure and
make recommendations on opportunities for improvement (raise ideas or known
faults).

Vehicle maintenance check sheets are a daily requirement and must be completed
by the operator.

All city work vehicles are to be kept in a roadworthy condition and defects reported to
the Litter Control/Cleansing Leading Hand and workshop Senior Mechanic as soon
as practicable.

All employees operating a city vehicle are responsible to ensure that the unit is
maintained in a clean and tidy condition.

Employees are expected to secure all vehicles, tools and equipment.

All employees from time to time will be provided with mandatory training opportunities
that they are required to attend.

Experience

Experience in the safe operation of medium rigid trucks

Considerable experience in working in an outdoor environment

Experience in working to set timeframes as an individual or within a team
environment
Knowledge

Sound knowledge of occupational safety and health practices including the safe use
of hand tools, vehicles, plant, equipment and machinery

Some knowledge of sanitation procedures
Skills

Prepared to undertake shiftwork and work on weekends, public holidays and any
other overtime duties whenever required

Developed communication and customer service skills with proven ability to work
both in a team and independently, with minimal direction and supervision under the
guidance of the supervisor.

Ability and level of fitness appropriate to a range of cleaning activities associated with
buildings, fixtures and open spaces

Sound standards of responsibility and able to exercise quality control
