Environmental Review Summary – October 2013
We conducted our Environmental Review using the template provided on
the Eco Schools website. All pupils across the school were given the
chance to contribute to the litter section of the review by means of a
survey.
Here is a summary of our findings.
We used our findings to make an action plan, this can also be found on the
website.
Litter


Inside the school – Students didn’t feel that the school was totally
free from litter but did think that there were enough bins, which
were in the right places.
School Grounds – Again, the general feeling was that the school
grounds weren’t free from litter. Students also felt that more bins
were required outside.
Waste Minimisation


Due to the very short time we have occupied our new building
recycling procedures need to be rolled out and communicated with
staff and students.
There is a clear policy in place that will allow us to recycle plastic,
cans, paper and cardboard. The Eco Group need to develop this
across the whole school and make sure that recycling boxes are
placed in classrooms and offices as well as the open spaces.
Energy


Lots of features to minimise the amount of energy we use in school
have been incorporated into the design of the building. For
example, solar panels and light sensors.
We thought we could conduct an energy survey to see if we could
find other ways to further improve our energy efficiency.
Water



Again, many types of Water Saving initiatives have been
incorporated into the design of the building to help minimise the
amount of water we use. For example, rain water harvesting and
push taps.
We identified that there is currently no water butt outside in the
school garden. Again, this is because we have been in our new
building for such a short time.
We need to promote the importance of saving water and the work
of charities such as Water Aid.
Transport

Transport is an area we need to reconsider when the building work
is complete and we have full access to the car park and school
grounds.
School Grounds

Again, the school grounds are an area we need to reconsider when
the building work is complete.
Global Citizenship


There is good work going on in school with global citizenship. We
are a Fairtrade School. We need to keep promoting Fairtrade.
We need to think about including a workshop on the UN Convention
on the Rights of the Child as part of our annual whole school
ESDGC day.
Healthy Living


We need to promote Healthy Living in school. We will do this by
creating a tutor time activity.
We need to work with other groups in school to try and set up a
SNAG group.
