Career Pathways FAQ
How does House Bill 186 or pathways impact my child?
House Bill 186 requires that students are enrolled in a pathway, as of August 2012. Additionally, students in
grades 8th, 9th, 10th and 11th must be advised of dual enrollment opportunities.
How does APS ensure that my child meets House Bill 186 requirements?
Currently, APS students are being advised of this requirement by their academic counselor and CTAE teachers.
What are Career Clusters?
Career Cluster – a broad grouping of occupations with common knowledge and skills for the purpose of
organizing educational and curricular programs; Georgia recognizes 16 national career clusters plus Energy
with Georgia specific aligned pathways based on business and industry recommendation (Agriculture, Business,
Finance, Information Technology, Human Services, Hospitality and Tourism, Marketing, Architecture and
Construction, Education, Health Science, Arts, AV/Technology and Communications, Energy, Manufacturing,
STEM, Transportation, Distribution and Logistics, Government and Public Administration and Law, Public
Safety, Correction s and Health).
What is a pathway completer?
Career, Technical and Agricultural Education Pathway Completers – a student who completes a series of three
or four specified courses in a CTAE-approved pathway leading to a possible industry-recognized credential
What is an End-of-Pathway Assessment?
End-of-Pathway Assessments (EOPA) – are assessments which aligned to industry standards and required by
federal law (Perkins IV) to measure technical attainment of students who have completed or are enrolled in their
third (3rd) level course. Only high school students are eligible to test.
Who creates the End-of-Pathway Assessments (EOPA)?
EOPAs are national industry recognizable credentials, state licensures, national occupational assessments or
state occupational assessments.
How much are the assessments? When are the assessments administered?
The cost of each assessment varies, but the Atlanta Public Schools’ Office of CTAE will incur the cost of each
assessment for all students. Assessments are administered in the fall and spring of each year depending on
whether or not the schools are on a 4x4 or 4x8 bell schedule.
May my child test multiple times?
Yes, if your child has completed two or more pathways, the child will be tested in each area he/she has
completed. However, your child will only have one chance to test for each pathway that he or she completes.
What if I have additional questions, who do I need to contact?
Please feel free to contact your child’s academic counselor or a CTAE Specialist at x5979.
