Torches must conform to current British Standards and be thoroughly checked before use. Permit to work required on industrial premises. Ensure that the pipe work is isolated from the surrounding materials with the use of fireproof materials and/or supports. Ensure that tools are suitable for the task and properly maintained. Pipe benders and ratchet tools must be oiled and greased as required. Water to be turned off at the mains before commencing work. Gas to be turned off at the mains before commencing work and windows and doors remain open for maximum ventilation. Fireproof materials must be placed behind pipe work to prevent fire in the surrounding material – suitable fire extinguisher to be provided. Gloves are to be worn when carrying out lead work and hands must be washed after the work is completed. Where there is a risk of burns, protective gloves must be worn. Correct handling is used where necessary. Proper training in manual handling techniques. Lead work must be carried out in well-ventilated areas and/or masks to be worn in confined spaces. Working areas are kept clear of waste and other materials at all times to prevent fire and/or injuries Risk assessments and method statements are issued to all workers involved in the activity.
