This notebook can be graded for organization and completeness. Textbooks Algebra I students will be issued a text book to keep at home for use as a reference and for homework assignments. Students are responsible for maintaining the text book. If a textbook is lost or damaged beyond usability, the student is responsible for the cost of replacement. Fines will be assessed for damages to textbooks. Students will have access to an online version of the text book at http://my.hrw.com. In addition to the textbook, the site includes tutorials and a graphing calculator tool. Textbooks must be covered. Calendar Students will receive a new calendar at the beginning of each three-week grading period. The calendar contains topics that will be covered each day, daily homework assignments, reviews, and major tests. Calendar can be used as a point of reference when a student is absent or assigned to ISS to find missing assignments. Grading Policy Algebra I uses the following scale for calculating students’ grades: Tests 60% Homework 20% Quizzes 20% Total 100% Tests are 60% of the students’ nine weeks grade. Major tests contain a combination of multiple choice questions, true/false questions, matching questions, and free response. On tests, as with all Algebra I work, the student must show steps to receive full credit. District wide practice STAAR tests will be used as test grades. These exams are not retestable. All students are expected to be prepared for each test. Re-testing If a student earns less than a 70 on a major test (excluding the STAAR End of Course Exam), he or she is entitled to a re-test of the skills and concepts. Before the student is eligible for a re-test, he or she must complete a supplementary/reteach assignment and turn it in at the time of retesting. Re-tests must be completed within one week of the student receiving his or her grade on the original test. It is the students’ responsibility to make arrangements for re-testing. The maximum grade the student can earn on a re-test is 70. Students may schedule tutoring and re-testing before or after school. Homework and in-class assignments are 20% of the students’ nine weeks grade. Algebra I has homework every night with the exception of test days. The teacher will use a variety of methods to evaluate homework. Homework is due the next school day after it has been assigned. If the student has trouble with the assignment, he or she will need to make arrangements to attend a tutorial session. The expectation is that students will have homework completed. Late homework is subject to the guidelines listed below. Algebra I has a fast pace and students who do not attempt homework assignments are at risk of failure. Quizzes are 20% of the students’ nine weeks grade. Students can expect at least one quiz per week. If a student misses a quiz, he or she will be responsible for making arrangements with the teacher to make it up. Attendance Attendance is a necessity! Algebra I is a foundation class for all other high school math classes. Missing even one day can will a student behind. Please encourage your student and their pencil to be in class on time every day. Make-up Work Make-up work will be accepted only from students who have an excused absence. It is the student’s responsibility to get their make-up assignments and due dates. Students should address make-up work with the teacher during tutorials before or after school. It is also the student’s responsibility to get any notes they have missed. If the student is present for the unit or chapter of material and is absent for the test review, he or she is required to take the test on the scheduled test day. If the student is absent on test day, a make-up test will be administered before or after school as instructed by the teacher. The make-up test will not be the same test as the one administered on the original test day. Late work will be graded as follows: 1 day late: maximum grade of 85 2 days late: maximum grade of 70 After 2 days: no credit will be given School Activities All work students miss due to school activities must be made up in advance of the activity unless the student makes arrangements with the teacher prior to the absence. Students are responsible for keeping up with skills and concepts covered in class during their absence. Students must understand the importance of their activity schedule and attend tutorials in advance in order to be prepared. All students, regardless of extra-curricular activities, are required to meet classroom due dates. Tutorials Students are encouraged to attend tutorials regularly in our math lab (CM 279). During tutorials, students may get help on a topic he or she does not understand, may get help on a topic missed due to an absence or school activity, may be tutored over questions missed on a failed test, and / or make up work. Tutoring is also available by appointment. Monday 3:00 – 4:30 PM Tuesday 6:30 – 7:15 AM Wednesday 3:00 – 4:30 PM Thursday 6:30 – 7:15 AM
