Use the Read 180 independent book library to: practice and apply reading skills independently. complete appropriately leveled books independently with success. build enjoyment of reading in a wide range of genres. develop behaviors and attitudes of lifelong learners. 2. Use the Read 180 software to: build background knowledge. form mental models that help to build comprehension in text. develop and practice phonics, automatic word recognition and reading fluency. build vocabulary skills. practice and apply comprehension strategies. practice and apply spelling and proofreading skills. practice writing and supporting an argument. 3. Identify cause and effect in a text. 4. Review how to summarize. 5. Articulate cause and effect in a text using signal words and complete sentences. 6. Use new academic vocabulary in complete sentences and practice previously taught words. 7. State a point of view and support it in writing. 8. Read and interpret information from a diagram. 9. Describe the features of a diagram using the appropriate terms: title, graphic, labels. 10. Identify the meaning of idioms. 11. Determine the meaning of new words by using a dictionary. 12. Show understanding of Workshop 7 vocabulary terms. 13. Show understanding of skills and concepts of Workshop 7 by taking an rSkills Test. 14. Practice test-taking strategies. Monday, 5/19/14 Instructional Strategies: 1. Whole group— We will briefly re-watch the portion of the Anchor DVD on the science text, “Life in the Ocean Zones.” After this, we will read the article on pp. 192-195. After reading, students will be able to answer the Key Idea, Target Word, and React & Write Questions on p. 192. 2. We will then break into rotation groups. During small group time, students will use text marking to answer the questions on p. 193. 3. Students will also rotate through the independent reading and computer software stations. 4. To conclude, students will complete a spelling exercise. Homework: NONE Materials needed: book, folder, assignment book, pencil Tuesday, 5/20/14 Instructional Strategies: 1. Whole group— Together, we will re-read the portion of “Life in the Ocean Zones” on pp. 194-195. Following this, students will be able to answer the Active Reading, Target Word, React & Write, and Summarize Questions on p. 194. We will then analyze the diagram of the Ocean Light Zones on p. 194. 2. We will then break into rotation groups. During small group time, students will use text marking to answer the questions on p. 195. 3. Students will also rotate through the independent reading and computer software stations. 4. To conclude, students will complete a spelling exercise. Homework: NONE Materials needed: book, folder, assignment book, pencil Wednesday, 5/21/14 Instructional Strategies: 1. Whole group— Together, we will review how to identify the meaning of idioms and correctly use a dictionary. 2. Students will then independently complete the Word Challenge on pp. 196-197. When they finish, students will begin their first independent rotation. 3. Approximately halfway through the period, we will come back into the whole group format to review the Word Challenge. 4. Students will then take the Workshop 7 vocabulary quiz. 5. Upon completion of the quiz, they will go to their second independent rotation. Anyone who finishes early will begin working on the Workshop Wrap-Up on pp. 210-211.
