AGENDA ITEMS

1. Web presence, marketing via the web, BSU branding process - Jim Pulliam / Scott Faust, guests

Scott – branding background on “Best Decision Ever” – tag line, brand promise. Invitation to see themselves in the present from the future. By attending BSU, will look back on it as a good decision. Attendance at BSU is a choice – for students

NOT from northern MN, it’s a decision to come here. Conversations with students and alumni were basis for this tag line.

What makes it the best decision ever? Brand themes include transformation (achieve, lead and serve), multicultural learning community, liberal education provides degree opportunities and communication and critical thinking skills; also a legendary campus, lakeside, northwoods, recreation. Hands on learning, real world experience. Small courses, dedicated faculty, sustainable living. Strong professional programs. Expressed on website through rotation of images, stories. Themes are focus of social media and print material.

Web marketing – videos, print ads, cable television in suburbs, Pandora, movie theater in St. Cloud area, youtube, will resume online media in Dec – May based on results. Also “Beaver Nation” focused on prospective students. Stick with Best

Decision Ever through next summer. Next step will move into idea of transformation. Be your best self. Tell stories of change, personal development that happens at BSU through outdoor experiences, international experiences, etc. New recruitment video by next fall. Also new international recruitment video this spring. Brand will be focus of new website redesign.

Focus has been on institutional wide marketing vs programs. Discussion of keeping print materials up to date. Virtual materials may be more useful. Materials that provide career pathway information to students may be beneficial. Need to tie this to the strategic enrollment management plan and capacity conversation. Rotation of highlighted programs.

Transformation conversation about how students grow while they are here – distinctiveness. Class size may no longer be an advantage for us? Repeated messages. Information for each program that conveys the same themes. Recruiting for majors. What are our distinctive programs? Difficult to decide which programs to highlight if we can highlight all of them.

Capacity limits of current web staffing. RFPs to get sites up. Still need to deal with updating and evolution of look, functionality, etc. Need for web and marketing writer. Need for staff development to get updates made on a short term basis.

What do departments need urgently? Staffing availability to make the updates? Portal vs external site. Open Savvy up to make other edits than just text changes. Individual release to people who have come capacity and reviewed before it goes live.

2. SEMP Task - capacity updates due - reminder - carry over item – Martin

Need these soon for task force.

3. Load Reports for Fall - carry over item – Patrick

New process with transition from Joe to Doug. Reviewed a few changes in the look of reports. Let Patrick know if there are any changes or questions. Load reports are being used to pay faculty. Need to get them back in a couple of weeks to move this forward. Sept 30 deadline – chairs review and return. Course load type needs to be correct for cost study and faculty payment.

4. Adjunct pay & assessment - draft copy - carry over item – Patrick

Updated draft language to address this situation. If this is the direction we move in, this will be effective Spring semester.

5. Overload - Martin

Overload credit for concurrent enrollment course – over 5 credit limit.

6. Concurrent Enrollment Courses and Faculty Overload –Patrick

Process for making sure faculty do not go over overload for concurrent enrollment courses. Courses are not determined until later in the spring, courses are set up in the summer and can end up putting the faculty over contractual limits. Send course lists to deans as soon as agreements are established with school districts to help determine load availability.

7. CIEE Conference - Minneapolis - November 20-23, 2013 – Martin

Martin, Jeanine, Colleen will attend.

8. HLC Pathways - Patrick Attachment

Transition from PEAQ into the Open Pathway. Next visit in 2019-20. Next step is the Quality Initiative proposal. Flexible in terms of what the proposal can be on.

9. Current and projected bachelor degree completions for metro students – Patrick

10. HLC Conference – April 10-14, 2014 – Chicago, IL

11. Other

Planning.

Book review of “facilitating a collegial department in higher education”. Colleen and Jim will review.
