Deans’ Meeting Agenda July 21, 2014 - 1:30 pm – 4:00 pm Deputy 301A 1. Why should you partner with the alumni association? (10 minutes) Caroline Norelius, BSU Foundation Shared information to assist with connecting with alumni from colleges. Asked for faculty who would attract young alumni to upcoming cruise event. Also shared information about event planning in terms of timelines needed to market and promote the event, etc. Ideally would like a year from start to finish. Homecoming is weekend of October 18. 2. IT discussion (10 minutes) Robb Carothers/Melissa Arneson Update on new reporting plan; CIO duties were moved under Bob Griggs, Bill Maki and Scott Faust. Lynda.com contract has been negotiated and will be rolled out in August with access through MyBSU portal. No longer have BSU computer store; has move some of the services to the bookstore. StarID to D2L transition will happen on Aug 4. Computer refresh has been pushed out one more year; will deal with replacements on a case by case basis this year. Not enough machines for all GAs and adjuncts – addressing this by adding computers to as many classrooms as possible. These will be listed on the ATC website. Will reinforce one computer per user policy. Also strongly discouraging personal printers on campus to save costs. Reminder of new faculty orientation scheduled during start up. 3. Final MAP version (carry over item) Attachment 1, 2, 3 Martin Review updated MAP and timeline. Will be discussed at next meeting. 4. 2014-15 Equipment Allocations Patrick Should all funds be requested via proposal? Last year half of the dollars were given to the colleges and half were held for proposals. Could require depts. to be up to date with assessment before awarding funds. Will bring this back to the next meeting. 5. Arranged courses and overload Attachment 4 Patrick Normally, faculty are not compensated for arranged courses. Policy has gone through Meet and Confer. Will include this policy in faculty information to be shared at the beginning of the academic year. 6. Department Chair information Attachment 5 Martin Attached an article to share with chairs about proactive recruiting. 7. Labor Relations Training update Attachment 6, 7, 8, 9 Martin Martin shared document he received at recent training. 8. Joining Gardners Institute – Attachment 10 / DFW rates Attachment 11, 12 Martin National network to address high DFW courses. Could possibly be a project for HLC. Will review national best practices for reducing DWF rates. 9. Education Master Schedule Attachment 13 Jim Barta Jim shared feedback from scheduling consultant about Prof Ed course schedule. Reinforced need for course rotations and decisions to NOT offer some courses every semester, based on enrollments. Also suggested offering courses in a similar time slot each semester may be helpful for consistency. Should this be shared at an academic forum or with individual colleges first? Next steps – Jim will share the feedback with his chairs and will ask consultant for his ideas of next departments or colleges to review; suggested SpEd or CAS. 10. Invitation: CAEL Training, Competency-based Education Attachment 14 Martin Criminal Justice is interested in attending the MnSCU workshop. Perhaps a faculty from TADT as well? 11. Fall Start-up agenda Handout Patrick Diane shared the draft agenda for Fall start up for Deans, chairs and academic affairs directors as well as schedule for campus community members. Possibility of workshop on ‘teaching/working with students from diverse cultures’ to be offered in the morning on 8/18, instead of an academic forum. Reschedule academic and college meetings with the chairs for Friday, 8/15. Reviewed schedule for campus wide events. 12. NTC impact Jeanine Move to next meeting - 13. Other HR is requesting fixed term appointments for 14-15 academic year. Also asking if HR should be involved in tracking tenure status for faculty. Also reminder of need to turn in adjunct appointments as able. Northland CTC will be on campus next Tuesday. Bob provided updated student numbers from NTC.
