Deans’ Meeting Agenda November 12, 2013 2-4 pm - Deputy 301A ACADEMIC MISSION: Bemidji State University is an undergraduate institution with specialized and distinct graduate programs where academic content and delivery of that content is grounded in the principles of social justice and democracy. ACADEMIC CORE VALUES: 1. Creative and critical thinking. 2. Living democratic principles. 3. Inclusion of students, staff, faculty and administrators in all aspects of university life. 4. Highly interactive, relevant and engaging teaching and learning environments. UPDATES 1. 2. MAP - none Program Assessment – Patrick - none PRESENTATION/DISCUSSION 2-3 PM Incivility - review, reflection & references Attachments Jeanine / Martin Discussed starting places for addressing incivility on campus; including self-awareness of where we are currently at. Colleen shared that the IFO Campus Climate report is posted online - http://ifo.org/equitysalary/campus-climate-study/. Importance in defining what this means on our campus. Set clear expectations related to the definition. Communicate expectations. Live it. Call people out when they are not living up to the expectations. First step – define what civility means at BSU and what the expectations are, for faculty and staff and students. Suggestion to include faculty senate, as well as other bargaining units and student senate, in the drafting of the definition and expectations. Martin will bring this to cabinet, leadership team and through the Meet and Confer process. AGENDA ITEMS 3-4 PM CARRY OVER ITEMS 1. Testing Center Bob / Lynn / Colleen NTC option is not currently being considered. Conversation needs to continue about next steps for BSU 2. College and University Teams for Regional Pathways to Postsecondary Summits Bob Griggs Hold for next time. NEW ITEMS 3. Doug Olney attending on IR - 10 minutes Cost study is out. Department chairs have information now. Doug has received a few comments back. Information is due to MnSCU a week from Friday. Doug needs it back early next week to get things wrapped up and sent out. Information that is sent to MnSCU is provided at the program level. Next step will be determination of revenue. This information is used as a benchmark for one of the MnSCU indicators. Doug is also sending out lib ed assessment information to instructors. Spring registration is about 50%. 4. AA Donor Development Fund Attachment Martin Dollars are available for training this year, through the foundation. First priority to permanent deans. Dollars can also be used for approved donor visits. 5. Deans participating in Scholarship Conference meetings and encouraging faculty involvement in the scholarship conference Patrick Committee that helps plan the committee would benefit from deans’ attendance. Troy will send out information to try to schedule the next meetings. Also could use more/new faculty involvement in the planning of this event. 6. Student Photos with Class Lists Patrick Would help faculty associate face with names, especially in larger classrooms. Supported. 7. Potential new practice (simpler!) for hiring a guest lecturer/presenter Patrick Could potentially do this with just a PO. Need to review the risk management language involved with the current form. Main concern is liability; proposal was made that a dean could send a note to purchasing that the guest lecturer had been approved and risk management issues have been reviewed. Would eliminate the need for having the guest lecturer signed and returned in advance of the presentation. 8. Follow-up on equipment RFP’s Patrick Patrick has contacted departments about equipment dollar distribution. 9. Enhancing the expectations on Master’s Research/Thesis proposals discussion Attachment Jim Graduate council supports efforts to enhance the rigor of proposals. Possible rubric that could be shared with students to help them know what is expected of proposals across programs? Deans are now the final signatory of proposals for programs in their college. Suggestion that final product could be copied to the dean before the committee approves – would allow for adjustments before the final copy comes through. 10. Hazardous waste training Attachment Patrick Colleen will touch base with chairs who need to attend this training; Shawn also has some faculty who need to attend. 11. Spring Start-up Martin Colleges will schedule events focused on assessment, etc; deans will facilitate with chairs on workshop topics. January 10 - welcome back for large group. Will discuss further next time. 12.
