AGENDA ITEMS
1.
Institutional Research update
Doug Olney
Enrollment is down 1.2% for spring point in time. Working on MnSCU cost study due this week.
Waiting for new salary numbers. Doug has sent preliminary numbers to chairs for review. May be
able to get preliminary numbers out even sooner in the academic year to use for planning
purposes.
2.
Course Evaluation process- revisited
Attachment 1
Patrick
Reviewed plan for using new instrument for campus wide course evaluation; revised plan to use
instead the CPD instrument and run this process through Institutional Research. Discussed how to
encourage students to participate. This proposal will need to go to meet and confer next.
Conversation about online vs hard copy evaluation; how to increase participation from students
and faculty.
3.
Seniority Roster and new program definition
Patrick
Will go to Jan meet and confer. Discussed a couple of roster updates, both on campus and for off
campus programs.
4.
Directors attending Deans council meeting
Patrick
May be useful to have other academic directors attend regularly, such registrar, grad studies,
international program director. Will invite on an “as needed” basis.
5.
Low enrollment courses for spring
Attachment 2
Patrick
Reviewed list of courses with less than 10 students to date.
6.
Curriculum size
Patrick
Reminder to review and discuss new curriculum proposals with departments, especially if the
proposal is to grow the curriculum. Goal is to keep degrees at 120 credits, majors at 60 credits.
Need to have new proposals in soon (December) for approval this academic year.
7.
Adjunct grievance impact
Attachment 3
Martin
Would cost approximately 20% more to hire fixed term faculty instead of adjuncts, at minimum.
Will need to continue to provide rationale for hiring and use of adjuncts.
8.
Presidential priorities
Martin
Increase enrollment of American Indian students to BSU. Propose a policy to make all campus
signs dual language signs. Also propose to have University fund job postings in publications
specific to Native American populations. Suggestion of a work group/task force to pull interested
people together, to come up with ideas for working with local high schools to help provide more
pathways for success for Native students. Will include BSU and NTC folks and will be focused on
what Academic Affairs can do to assist public schools in our area.
Enrollment ideas: We need an Introduction to BSU MOOC – credit can count for something at
BSU. Take for free, to get acquainted with BSU. Earn some credit at BSU for successfully
completing. We need a free course taught in Bemidji for adults to ‘try out’ BSU. Can be offered
as experimental courses. We will cover the cost for a faculty member to develop both of these.
Need recommendations on who and what will be the content of each course.
9.
