MARACOOS Operations Call SUMMARY October 19, 2012 Call in number: 888-648-3590 user #: 4018015 leader# 3978418 Attendees: Scott, Mike, Oscar, Steve, Gerhard, Hugh, Avijit, Bill, Peter, Matt, John, Wendell, Jay, Tony, Jim, Alan 1. MARCOOS Final Report April-Sept 2012 a. All The necessary text has been submitted. THANKS to the team. b. We still need financial reports from institutions. Please get in ASAP! 2. Website: a. Perhaps we add a users Science forum to the page b. Do we add a section to highlight new test products (not operational). Perhaps we put images on these pages with water marks stating research product. c. 3. MTS Oceans 2012 Hampton Roads: a. 18 MARACOOS attendees and talks, also chaired several sessions. b. MARACOOS/SECOORA/NERACOOS/IOOS booth a success c. Gerhard and Doug went on boat trip with Kathy Sullivan to see CBIBS Buoy d. Instrument Vendors want to use MARACOOS as a test bed for value added work e. Kathy Sullivan: i. Integration is the future: 1+1=3. ii. She wants to see the regions working together more as well, to show a national network. iii. She specifically used MARACOOS in the IOOS summit talk with the Irene data set used to improve models. She is definitely a supporter of IOOS. 4. MARACOOS Meeting Nov 1-2 a. Schedule out Monday b. Zdenka and Lou Uccellini are attending on Thursday. c. Some discussion on fisheries (gliders, Vemco, sea nettles, butter fish and ocean/weather forecast integration) 5. Wind Ensemble: a. Added two new models (Herder, 3km) and NAMS (5km). Need to upgrade hardware to run these models. b. Working with local weather services trying to get the model data reported more regularly. c. Integration into the asset map, working with Eoin on THREDDS d. Can we run verbal survey at meeting to see what the model users want? What parameters they want most so he can parse down the models to input important parameters. e. Model ensemble run timing is an issue because of delays in delivery of models to Jay. f. Website: http://co.weatherflow.com/maracoos/ g. availability to the ocean modelers. 1 6. 7. 8. 9. h. Fisheries: is there a place to have the fisheries team not only work with SST/CODAR but also with the weather data as that has an impact on fishing (eg winds, direction, rain, stream/river outflow, salinity). We do see that fall occurs at different times over the last 10 years, affecting Sturgeon runs. Could this be transitioned to Sea Nettles model in Chesapeake? There are people at NCEP that would be interested in this. Soon, but need to get permission: ACTION: Add link to Sea Nettles forecast from MARACOOS to NCEP. Satellites – a. Next steps with our existing products – i. Salinity, coldest dark pixel SST, etc, some to be presented at the MARACOOS annual meeting. b. Rutgers, Delaware, CCNY, JHU/APL is still running: Next Steps i. UDel is receiving VIIRS. Working with APS to create useful products rather than simple true color images. c. Reprocessed back to 2009 all ocean color from MODIS, in real time as well. Using NRL’s APS software. d. Salinity product is on hold because it needs some additional work as recent in situ comparisons have suggested. Long term bi-weekly composites work well for climatology, but not for day to day uses. e. Perhaps we have a research page that lists new products being tested. f. Matt has offered to train students/techs on how to run the new products (e.g. salinity) HF Radar a. Metrics: Reported to Jack Harlan at MTS. b. Curly vector plots working in the bays, (priorities) c. IBM research is interested in getting CODAR data from NY Harbor and Chesapeake Bay to test assimilation. d. RU will send 5MHz system to Cape Lookout NC for 9 months, then move to a gap filler in the main network. e. Technician calls continue every 2 weeks. f. We are working on improving response time to priority sites. Gliders – a. Triangles flown by Blue i. Alan will be using the data to test Assimilation b. Oxygen survey update from NJ c. OTIS Glider with Vemco Receiver has been integrated successfully i. Fish survey update from Delaware. Plans for the future? ii. 24 fish located (and counting), some tagged back in 2008. iii. Danielle will present data at Fisheries meeting, Matt will show at MARACOOS meeting iv. Will perform another test in March/April Sturgeon run v. Have been asked to run along Halifax line (Salmon) vi. They can assess biological fish forecast models based on SST/CODAR with Otis d. Darwin just finished up mission. Successful test of new optics sensor as well as new propeller. e. Multi-frequency acoustic detector (assess what zoo/phytoplankton in water) test deployment in the spring for APL on RU glider could be combined with Otis f. Perhaps we need to talk to Mid-Atlantic Fisheries council (Tony could be point person here) Waveglider/Fetch - demo project status a. Liquid Robotics and Sonardyne visit to RU Wed, Oct 24, 1-5pm 2 b. c. d. 10. DMAC a. b. c. d. Liquid Robotics joining MARACOOS Still working on comms with Fetch/Tsunami sensor Will be deployed through late November Bottom temp product - readiness for Annual Meeting. My MARACOOS update OOI glider data update Working with UW and Scripps and IOOS on Glider data format agreement. We have a verbal agreement in place (similar to Australia). 11. MODELING a. HOPS - Andre's MTS talk update - possible comparison to HYCOM in MARACOOS & off Brazil? b. ROMS - ROMS meeting in Brazil - assimilation/validation results to share before the meeting? c. NYHOPS - Progress on HF Radar assimilation - international interest – d. How do we move toward an ocean ensemble during this reporting period? e. ROMS meeting in Rio De Janeiro next week Upcoming Meetings and Important Dates i. ii. iii. Nov 1-2: MARACOOS Annual Meeting Renaissance Baltimore Harbor Hotel November 13-16: IOOS Summit, Dulles Airport Hilton (Scott, Josh, Gerhard, Mike Bruno, Larry, Eoin, Andy McGovern, Ed Kelly, Mike Crowley) MARCO annual meeting November 26 at ODU 3
