BIOLOGY College of Agricultural and Life Sciences Specialization: Biotechnology This program is for students preparing for a career where knowledge of molecular biology and genetic engineering are important. Students will have the opportunity to learn various techniques and scientific procedures in molecular biology, virology, bioengineering, cell and tissue culture, microscopy and bioinformatics. This specialization prepares students for graduate study in the biological sciences. To remain on track, students must complete the appropriate critical-tracking courses, which appear in bold, with a 2.5 GPA or better. Students are required to complete HUM 2305 (What is the Good Life) in semester 1 or 2. Semester 1 Credits CHM 2045 and 2045L General Chemistry 1 (3) and 4 Laboratory (1) (GE-P) Composition (GE-C, WR) 3 Social and Behavioral Sciences (GE-S) 3 HUM 2305 What is the Good Life (GE-H) 3 Elective 2 Total Semester 3 Semester 2 (3) and Laboratory (1) (GE-P) MAC 2311 Analytic Geometry and Calculus 1 Economics: ECO 2013, ECO 2023, AEB 2014 or AEB 3103 (GE-S) Humanities (GE-H) 15 (3) and Laboratory (1) STA 2023 Introduction to Statistics 1 (3) or 4 3-4 MAC 2312 Analytic Geometry and Calculus 2 (4) CHM 2210 Organic Chemistry 1 (3) or 3-4 CHM 3217 Organic Chemistry/ Biochemistry 1 (4) Humanities (GE-H) or Social and Behavioral Sciences (GE-S) 3 Elective 2 Total Semester 5 4 4 3-4 3 Total Credits BSC 2010 and 2010L Integrated Principles of Biology 1 Credits CHM 2046 and 2046L General Chemistry 2 Semester 4 14-15 Credits BSC 2011 and 2011L Integrated Principles of Biology 2 (3) and Laboratory (1) (GE-B) CHM 2211 Organic Chemistry 2 (3) or CHM 3218 Organic Chemistry/Biochemistry 2 (4) 4 3-4 CHM 2211L Organic Chemistry Laboratory 2 Electives 7 15-17 Total Credits Semester 6 16-17 Credits PHY 2005 and PHY 2005L Applied Physics 2 (3) PHY 2004 and PHY 2004L Applied Physics 1 (3) and and Laboratory (1) or Laboratory (1) or PHY 2053 and PHY 2053L Physics 1 (4) and Laboratory (1) or 4-5 PHY 2048 and PHY 2048L Physics with Calculus 1 (3) and PHY 2054 and PHY 2054L Physics 2 (4) and 4-5 Laboratory (1) or PHY 2049 and PHY 2049L Physics with Calculus Laboratory (1) 2 (3) and Laboratory (1) CHM 3120 and CHM 3120L Analytical Chemistry (3) and Laboratory (1) BCH 4024 Introduction to Biochemistry and Molecular Biology* AEC 3030C Effective Oral Communication or SPC 2608 4 Genetics: AGR 3303 (3) or PCB 3063 (4) 4 PCB 3134 Eukaryotic Cell Structure and Function 3 Introduction to Public Speaking 3-4 AEC 3033C Research and Business Writing For Agricultural and Life Sciences Elective Total Semester 7 Laboratory (1) 4 3 2 15-16 Total Credits MCB 3020 and 3020L Basic Biology of Microorganisms (3) and 3 Semester 8 15-17 Credits MCB 4304 Genetics of Microorganisms or 3 PCB 4522 Molecular Genetics PCB 4674 Evolution 4 BSC4936 Critical Analysis of Biological Research 2 Biotechnology course ** 3 Biotechnology course ** 3 4 Electives Elective Total *Not required if CHM 3218 was taken **See reverse for approved list of courses 15 7 Total 15 Biotechnology Electives Choose a minimum of 6 credits from at least 2 of the following subgroups: General Biotechnology Course # ABE 4660 ABE 4662 CHM 4300L BSC 4434C ZOO 3603C Title Applied Microbial Biotechnology Quantification of Biological Processes Laboratory in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Credits 3 3 2 Intro to Bioinformatics 3 Evolutionary and Developmental Biology 3 Prerequisite None ABE2062 or BSC2010, EGN3353 or CWR3201 and ABE3612C CHM 3218 or CHM 2211 and BCH 4024, CHM 2211L MCB 3020 or BCH 4024 or CHM 3218 with C or better BSC2011 and 2011L with C or better Access Summer Fall Fall, Spring, Summer C Fall Fall Food Biotechnology Course # Title Credits FOS 3042 FOS 4202 FOS 4222 Introductory Food Science Food Safety and Sanitation Food Microbiology 3 2 3 FOS4222L Food Microbiology Lab 2 FOS 4311 & FOS4311L Food Chemistry and Lab 4 Prerequisite None MCB 2000 and 2000L MCB 2000 or 3020 MCB2000L or MCB3020L, coreq FOS4222 CHM 2200 or CHM 2210 and 2211;
