Dear parent or legal guardian,
Your son/daughter has enrolled in a biotechnology course that is offered at your High School. This course
can receive three units of University of Arizona credit in the Molecular and Cellular Biology Department as
MCB 101. MCB 101 will emphasize in biotechnology including career in biotechnology, history and
applications of recombinant DNA technology and the human genome project, and laboratory safety
practices. Students are introduced to a variety of techniques used in biotechnology and molecular biology
using the equipment necessary in a research or industrial setting. Students are expected to develop skills in
DNA and Protein Gel Electrophoresis, Microbiology, PCR, Pipetting, Solution Preparation, Serial Dilutions,
Standard Curve, and Spectrophotometry.
MCB 101 in High School is designed for high school sophomores, juniors and seniors having completed
High School Biology. Upon successful completion of the course, students who are enrolled in MCB 101, will
earn three units of university credit. The online application for admission deadline is January 14, 2015,
registration and payment deadline for the course with Outreach College is February 4, 2015.
In order to receive credit for the course, your student will be required to do the following:
 Online application for UA admission as a UA non-degree seeking student, this begins in September
2014. The online admission applications will be filled out in class. Students will need their social
security number.
 Register and pay tuition online via credit card in the amount of $475 to the UA Outreach College- due
by February 4, 2015 or your student will not be registered in the course. Note this tuition charge
has been reduced from the standard rate by about 80% through scholarship support offered by the
University of Arizona. Limited addition scholarships are available to students and will be given
based on need and merit.
