BIOLOGY College of Agricultural and Life Sciences Specialization: Natural Science This program is for students interested in descriptive and interpretive biology, with an emphasis on field biology. This specialization provides exposure to the major forms of flora and fauna, and integrates some of the major elements that influence flora and fauna, namely soil/water relations and human activities. This specialization prepares students for graduate study in the biological sciences. To remain on track, students must complete the appropriate critical-tracking courses, which appear in bold, with a 2.5 GPA or better. Students are required to complete HUM 2305 (What is the Good Life) in semester 1 or 2. Semester 1 Credits CHM 2045 and 2045L General Chemistry 1 (3) and 4 Laboratory (1) (GE-P) Composition (GE-C, WR) 3 Social and Behavioral Sciences (GE-S) 3 HUM 2305 What is the Good Life (GE-H) 3 Elective 2 Total Semester 3 Semester 2 (3) and Laboratory (1) (GE-P) MAC 2311 Analytic Geometry and Calculus 1 Economics: ECO 2013 or ECO 2023 or Humanities (GE-H) 15 (3) and Laboratory (1) STA 2023 Introduction to Statistics 1 (3) or 4 3-4 MAC 2312 Analytic Geometry and Calculus 2 (4) Humanities (GE-H) or Social and Behavioral Sciences (GE-S) 3 Electives 5 Total Semester 5 4 3 Total Semester 4 14-15 Credits BSC 2011 and 2011L Integrated Principles of Biology 2 (3) and Laboratory (1) (GE-B) CHM 2200 and 2200L Organic Chemistry (3) and Laboratory (1) Electives 4 4 8 15-16 Total Credits 4 3-4 AEB 2014 or AEB 3103 (GE-S) Credits BSC 2010 and 2010L Integrated Principles of Biology 1 Credits CHM 2046 and 2046L General Chemistry 2 Semester 6 16 Credits PHY 2005 and PHY 2005L Applied Physics 2 (3) PHY 2004 and PHY 2004L Applied Physics 1 (3) and and Laboratory (1) or Laboratory (1) or PHY 2053 and PHY 2053L Physics 1 (4) and Laboratory (1) or 4-5 PHY 2048 and PHY 2048L Physics with Calculus 1 (3) and PHY 2054 and PHY 2054L Physics 2 (4) and 4-5 Laboratory (1) or PHY 2049 and PHY 2049L Physics with Calculus Laboratory (1) 2 (3) and Laboratory (1) Genetics: AGR 3303 (3) or PCB 3063 (4) 3-4 AEC 3030C Effective Oral Communication or SPC 2608 3 Introduction to Public Speaking Natural science course ** 3 Elective 1 Total Semester 7 PCB 4674 Evolution AEC 3033C Research and Business Writing For Agricultural and Life Sciences Natural science course ** 14-16 8 Electives 8 Semester 8 **See reverse for approved list of natural science courses 16 14-15 Credits BSC4936 Critical Analysis of Biological Research 2 77 Natural science courses ** Electives Total 3 3 Total Credits Natural science courses ** 4 7 Total 16 Natural Science Electives Choose a minimum of 21 credits, with one course from each of the following seven subgroups: Vertebrate Animal Biology Course # Title Credits Prerequisite Access FAS 4202C Biology of Fishes 4 BSC 2011 and 2011L Fall WIS 3401 Wildlife Ecology and Management 3 BSC 2011 and BSC 2011L Fall WIS 3402 Wildlife of Florida 3 None ZOO 4307C Vertebrate Biodiversity 4 BSC 2011 and 2011L with C or better Fall ZOO 4472C Avian Biology 4 BSC 2011 and 2011L with C or better and PCB 4674 (recommended) Spring Spring Invertebrate Animal Biology Course # ENY 3005 and 3005L ENY4161 Title Credits Prerequisite Principles of Entomology and Laboratory 2/1 None (LAB REQUIRED) Insect Classification 3 ENY3005/L Social Insects 3 None ENY4590C ENY4592 Beekeeping Mosquito Identification Mosquito Biology 3 3 3 Junior Standing Junior Standing Junior Standing NEM 3002 Principles of Nematology 3 None 4 BSC 2011 and 2011L and PCB4674 with C or better ENY4455C ENY4573 ZOO 4205C Invertebrate Biodiversity Access Fall, Spring, Summer-C Fall, Spring Fall Fall, Spring, Summer C Spring Fall Spring (even yrs.)
