Your son/daughter has enrolled in one of two biotechnology courses that is offered at your High School.
Students can receive three units of University of Arizona credit in the Molecular and Cellular Biology
Department for each of these courses. The first year of this course sequence, MCB101, emphasizes
biotechnology including career in biotechnology, history and applications of recombinant DNA technology
and the human genome project, and laboratory safety practices. Students are introduced to a variety of
techniques used in biotechnology and molecular biology using the equipment necessary in a research or
industrial setting. Students are expected to develop skills in DNA and Protein Gel Electrophoresis,
Microbiology, PCR, Pipetting, Solution Preparation, Serial Dilutions, Standard Curve, and
Spectrophotometry. The second year of the course sequence, MCB 102, allows students to perfect
biotechnology techniques, learn to read research papers, and hear about cutting edge research at the
University of Arizona. It includes advanced biotechnological techniques, fundamentals of cell biology and
genetics, applications of biotechnology, bioethics, and careers in biotechnology. This course offers a unique
opportunity to motivated high school students who possess a strong interest in pursuing advanced
education in bioscience and biomedical science. Through laboratory activities and field-based research,
students will conduct independent research in an active laboratory, and learn to communicate their
research by presenting at their Regional Science Fair (SARSEF or CARSEF).
Upon successful completion of the course, students who are enrolled in MCB 101 or MCB 102, will earn
three units of university credit (up to six units for both courses). The online application for admission
deadline is January 15, 2016, registration and payment deadline for the course with Outreach College is
February 11, 2016.
In order to receive credit for the course, your student will be required to do the following:
 Online application for UA admission as a UA non-degree seeking student, this begins in September
2015. The online admission applications will be filled out in class. Students will need their social
security number.
 Register and pay tuition online via credit card in the amount of $475 to the UA Outreach College- due
by February 11, 2016 or your student will not be registered in the course. Note this tuition charge
has been reduced from the standard rate by about 80% through scholarship support offered by the
University of Arizona. Limited addition scholarships are available to students and will be given
based on need and merit.
