SPRING 2013 Internet CHLD 1302 (CRN: 23372, Section: 491) Course Schedule (Tentative) Date Class Activity Plans, Discussion Content, and Reading Assignments Week One: March 11 – March 17, 2013 Getting Started First of all, take a deep breath! Your instructor understands that it can be anxiety producing to see such a detailed list of course tasks. This document outlines the work to be done for the entire course. Some students want to see the “big picture” while others feel overwhelmed by it and would prefer to focus on the course one week at a time. Remember: everything you have to do is listed here, but you don’t have to do it all at once! This document is how the instructor communicates with you regarding assignments and deadlines. Each week, you are expected to refer to this document in order to know what to do. Each week, you should also check your TCC email and Blackboard Announcements as there may be changes or additions to this Course Schedule. If you develop a system of checking off items on this list as you complete them, you will find that you manage your time effectively and have a better chance of succeeding in this course. While it may seem daunting to be given all of this information up front, I promise that you will eventually find it reassuring to have everything that you must do written on a “to do” list that you can manage. It is also a good idea to take care of housekeeping chores related to your TCC e-mail account at this time. When you participate in an online course you must take good care of your e-mail account. If you have limited space for storing messages on your account, e-mail messages from the instructor may bounce back because your account is full. Clean up your e-mail account as soon as possible. Purchase course textbooks and materials if you have not done so (child development books are available at the West Campus bookstore ONLY. This book cannot be purchased at the Northeast bookstore). There is one required book, which has an upside-down toddler on the cover, by Marilyn Segal. Some documents that you will read in this course are available online as .pdf documents. To read these documents, you must have Adobe Acrobat Reader. This program is available free for download at: http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html If you do not have Adobe Acrobat Reader 7.0, download it now for use in this course. Spring 2013 CHLD 1302 CDA Competency 2 – 2nd 8 weeks Page 1 Another tool that you will need in this course is the ability to view Power Point documents. If your computer does not have Power Point, you will need to download a Power Point viewer. If you do not have Power Point or a Power Point viewer, download it now for use in this course. If you are unfamiliar with the Child Development Associate Credential process and its requirements, you will be at a disadvantage as you complete this course. You need to have already chosen your CDA setting: center-based preschool, center-based infant-toddler, or family home child care. Visit www.cdacouncil.org for more information about CDA if needed. It is recommended that students pursuing the CDA also take CHLD 1501, the CDA Assessment Course, as soon as possible after electing to pursue the CDA and choosing a setting. This course is offered three times each semester. If you are not pursuing a CDA, please e-mail the instructor immediately to make her aware of this circumstance. Review your syllabus for information about course requirements that are specific to the CDA credentialing process; these requirements will not be waived for you. If you are not currently working in childcare, you will need to determine a childcare setting for use in completing the requirements of this course. Sites must be state licensed and must be pre-approved by the instructor. The TCC Child Development Program’s laboratory school is the preferred observation site. To propose an observation site other than TCC West Campus, e-mail the instructor the name of the program, the program’s director, and a telephone number for the program. Note: The instructor has a variety of tools that allow her to track your course participation. Blackboard as a system keeps statistics about the way that each person uses the course site. Blackboard can tell me, for example, the date and time of each of your visits to the course site. It can tell me which documents you accessed and which areas of the site you visited. Essentially, every time you click your mouse while you are in Blackboard is recorded as a statistic. This information is used to track attendance and participation.
