Week 20 Assessment 1/31/2014
2 pts
Period: ______________
/10
1. Which of Boomtown’s 3 locations (marsh, hill, cliff) is most stable? Explain your reasoning.
The marsh appears to be the most stable. It has the most gradual slope and the changes in topography
occurring within the marsh are due to building on or near the marsh. The hillside has also changed due
to building, but the top of the hill (where there isn’t much building) is change too, which means the hill
is likely undergoing some natural change. That means it is less stable than the marsh. All of the
topographic changes to the occur to the cliff are natural indicating that it is the LEAST stable to build
on.
Use the topographic map below to answer questions 2 and 3.

2. The elevation at Point X is __280 m__.

3. Which side of Oak Hill has the most gradual slope?
a. north side
b. east side
c. south side
d. west side

4. Describe and give one example of the natural process for each: weathering, erosion, and deposition.
WEATHERING: an earth process that breaks down rocks into smaller pieces over time -- rocks
breaking apart, freezing/thawing rock, burrowing plant roots
EROSION: the movement of sediment from one place to another by water -- river, landslide, mudslide
DEPOSITION: when sediment is left or deposited somewhere after erosion -- river delta
3 pts
5. How did the river model we used this week demonstrate the process of erosion and deposition?
Explain your answer for each of these processes.
RIVER EROSION: the water cut clear channels in the sand/soil of the river bed
RIVER DEPOSITION: the sediment carried downstream from river erosion formed a delta at the
mouth of the river; the sediment formed new land where it was deposited by the river
