War of 1812 Records (Fold 3) 20 Jun 2012 From: "Sharyl" <ferrall@mtaonline.net> Last weekend I was busy finishing up my compiled list of War of 1812 veterans who lived in, died in or are buried in Clayton county. I wanted to get it online by June 18th, the 200th anniversary of the start of the War of 1812. Actually I wanted to get a compiled listing for all 3 of my counties online, but the other two will have to wait ....... I ran out of time :-( Anyway, I checked out Fold3 because I knew that all of their War of 1812 records are free until June 30th. I got very lucky with one of the men ... his full pension file is on Fold3. After wading through over 40 pages of the document, I finally found his burial place. This guy was 89 years old on the 1885 Iowa State Census, still living in Clayton county with his wife. Of course I had assumed he died & was buried there also. Nope ....... he is buried in Winnebago county. After the 1885, his son moved to Winnebago county and took the folks with him. To make a long story short, I then looked for the pension records for each of the other men on my list. None were there because Fold3 has only started putting War of 1812 records on their website. Only 3% are online. Since there were no veterans who served in this war from Iowa, a researcher needs to look for their records in the state they served from. In the case of my soldier, he served from Kentucky, and his surname starts with 'A'. Fold3 has only A & B online for Kentucky! For the War of 1812 service records, they only have those from Lake Erie Station. So the records are very limited, but certainly will grow with time. If you'd like to see what I found for the Clayton county War of 1812 veterans, visit this page: http://sharylscabin.com/Clayton/military/War_1812.htm The Society of the War of 1812 in Iowa has a website and a facebook page. Worth checking out. They just received their charter last week. If CC's want to start a War of 1812 page for their county, the website has a list of names by county, although it is far from complete. I have 13 soldiers on the list I compiled for Clayton county, they only have 3 of the names. www.iowa1812.org http://www.facebook.com/Iowa1812 Sharyl Ferrall Allamakee, Clayton & Franklin counties June 21, 2012 (June 21, 2012 IAGenWeb list… continuing info.) A good many lands were given to 1812 veterans, but I could find no evidence that they ever lived in the county. Although I suspect that many of these warrants were sold to people who were not related to the veteran, it's very possible that many were. I think I'll go back through them and record the names. So far all of the 1812 MLW's I've found are given under the authority of the 1850 Script. GLO gives the option of searching only these patents: from the search page for "Documents by Type" enter Iowa and the county you want. Leave the name blank but leave the check marks in patentees and warrantees. Leave the 'Land Description' blank. Go to the 'Miscellaneous' section and leave everything blank except 'Authority'. Use the drop down menu to select 'Script Warrant Act of 1850 [Sep 28, 1850] (9 Stat. 520)'. Then click 'Search Patents'. You'll find that the results are mostly 1812 veterans. Others are for very early wars/conflicts. I found several for the Florida War which I need to research to see what it was. The land is given by Township-Section-Range, so to pinpoint where the land is located within the county, a CC will need to cross-reference a map that gives that info. I use an Iowa DOT book of county maps that I purchased on Ebay several years ago. Sharyl
