Staffing and Baby News
In September we will be welcoming
back Mrs Ferreday after her maternity
leave; she will be working Wednesday,
Thursday and Friday. Mrs Biggin, who
we recently appointed, will teach on
Monday and Tuesday. Together they
will be responsible for the Y5 class. A
big thank you to Mr Jarvis and Mrs
Wright who have been covering
maternity leave in the current Y5 class.
SATs (KS1 and KS2)
For yet another year, we are delighted
with the achievements of all of our
pupils throughout the school and thank
the staff for their hard work and
commitment. We feel that the careful
thought (given each year) to the way
we organise classes is testament to
this and the good outcomes of all
pupils. We also thank you for the
support and encouragement you give
at home.
KS2 SATs
Reading – Level 4 and above – 95%
(49% of these at level 5)
Writing – Level 4 and above – 97%
(46% of these at level 5)
Maths – Level 4 and above – 97%
(54% of these at level 5)
English & Maths – Level 4 and above
– 95%
A level 4 is the ‘expected level’ for a
Y6 child. The level 6 tests were
optional this year. We decided to let
some of our children ‘Aim High’, our
school motto, and experience these
even
though
there
was
little
information available about the format
of them. They were extremely
challenging!
EYFS(Early years foundation stage)
97% of pupils achieved the ‘expected
level’ for the specific areas of learning
required which was excellent. Well
done.
Our early years also received a visit
from the Local Authority Moderator
which happens every three years. She
was delighted with the excellent work
done within the team and with the
detailed, accurate assessments and
collation of evidence.
Year 1
A year 1 phonics ‘check’ was also
introduced by the government this
year. I am delighted to say that 93% of
our children reached ‘the required
standard’ which is fabulous. Again, the
excellent phonics teaching in our
school has helped us to achieve this
result. Although it is only end of key
stage data that we report on, progress
in all year groups has been very good
so well done to everyone and keep up
the excellent work.
*28th May – Jubilee Party Day. This
was a truly amazing day with the
‘Queen’ welcoming everyone into
school; you may not have recognised
me at the side of her! Pupils and staff
entered into the spirit of things
dressing up in clothes from different
decades and participating in a range of
events. Thank you to many of our
parents and friends who came in to
help too – and for dressing up (photos
on website).
*Olympic event – thank you to
everyone who attended the Torch
event at Bolsover, even though school
was closed. We were also lucky
enough to have an Olympic Torch in
school on Friday 6th July which was
kindly brought in by Peter Jackson;
thank you to him as it was really lovely
for the children to see as several
classes have studied the Olympics as
part of their topic work and 6H
presented this theme for their class
assembly.
Sports Activities/Events/Clubs
56JW & 6H – Cricket coaching by
Derbyshire County Cricket Board
9 of our Y6 children took part in the
Tag Rugby partnership final as they
were winners of the cluster.
Class 6H went to Barlborough Hall to
play rounders and cricket.
All juniors had a netball coaching
session.
7 of our Y6 children attended a Kwik
Cricket tournament and finished
runners up.
16 of our Y6 children took part in a
Bikeability course.
Special Events
*W/c 23rd April was our Times Tables
Challenge Week in school with
everyone very busy learning their
tables and achieving different levels
and certificates. Our finalists were
showcased in our Friday Assemblies,
with Mrs Mills giving them a thorough
test of tables knowledge. Well done to
them all - if you look on our website
you can see pictures of our finalists
and Times Tables Masters.
Clubs:
Street Dance – Tues morning for
infants, Wednesday morning for
juniors
Cheerleading – Thursday after school,
all age
Multisports – Friday after school,

Whitehall Residential (30th May – 1st
June)
A group of our Y5/6 pupils went to
Whitehall for three days and took part
in a wide range of outdoor pursuits
which were quite a challenge! They
thoroughly enjoyed their experiences
as shown by the photos, which we are
hoping to put on the website. A big
thank you to Miss Gee for organising
and coordinating the residential and to
Miss Harbottle, Mrs Hewison and Carl
for their efforts too. They were all
really tired when they got back - I don’t
think they had a great deal of sleep!

Y6 Enterprise
This year, once again, the Y6 have
been working on several enterprise
projects to help towards their end of
year treat which they decided to be
‘paintballing’. Thank you to Mrs Nicola
Holmshaw for organising this event for
the Y6 which took place on Saturday
14th July.
PTA
Summer Fayre (Saturday 23rd June)
Our Summer Fair, once again , was a
huge success thanks to the hard work
of our PTA and to everyone else for
your fabulous support, raising just over
£2,000. Even the weather was kind to
us!
Summer Ball (Friday 13th July)
Our annual PTA Charity Ball again
was a truly enjoyable night where we
all managed to scrub up quite well! It is
lovely to see everyone so relaxed and
mixing together in a different
environment. We raised £914. Thanks
to Nicola and the PTA for your
organisation once more.
Website Developments
Please have a look at the
developments on our new website. If
you subscribe when you go to
www.barlborough.derbyshire.sch.uk
then you will receive email alerts for
new content. In September we want to
start developing our class pages. Also,
if you haven’t done so already please
return your agreement to allow your
child’s image to appear on the
website. It would be a shame if we
have to blur some of the images out as
we have some lovely photos that we
can share. Thanks again to Dave
Vernon (parent and governor) for all
his hard work on this.
Tesco and Sainsbury’s Vouchers
Thank you for sending in all of your
vouchers. 19,000 collected for Tesco
and 4,000 for Sainsburys. With these
we managed to purchase various
items of PE equipment and 13 mini
digital cameras.
Barlborough’s Got Talent (13th July)
Always one of the most popular events
of the year! It has become quite a
tradition now for our Y6 to organise
this annual extravaganza. The 2
winners from each class entertained
everyone, compared by our very own
‘Ant & Dec’. Well done again Y6 (and
staff) for the event and congratulations
to the winner for 2012, Hannah M.
Final Assembly (18th July)
Our final whole school assembly took
place on Wednesday. These are
always a fabulous occasion to
celebrate achievements at our school
and lovely to see everyone together.
The final assembly holds a little
sadness too as it is when we say
goodbye to our Y6 and present them
with a little souvenir which is kindly
purchased by our PTA and presented
by Steve Riley, our Chair of
Governors. It is also lovely to share
this occasion with our Y6 parents even
though it is a tight squeeze! Good luck
to all our Y6 as they move on to their
secondary education.

Another very successful year at
Barlborough following our excellent
OFSTED last year and wonderful
results once again. We were also
delighted that in April we had our
school improvement review record
with the Local Authority, based on last
academic year; we were judged to be
outstanding. Thank you for your
continued support within our strong
school community. Have a great
summer,
with
hopefully
some
sunshine!
See you in September
Lorraine Jones
Well done to everyone.
