Dear Parents/Carers,

Weekly Update

Welcome back to the Summer Term full of learning, looking after each other, having fun and succeeding. It has been wonderful to be out on the playground in the sunshine talking to all the children about the exciting things they got up to over the Easter break. All children should by now have brought home a curriculum letter from their class teacher outlining the learning they will be doing this term and arrangements for PE and homework. I hope you will be able to help engage your children in their class topic. Please feel free to come in and help out if you have a relevant specialism or interest in the topics being covered.

Learning around the school

Year 6 – Have been revising inverse functions in maths and lots of spelling, punctuation and grammar (SPaG). They have also been brushing up on their comprehension and learning about taxonomy in science.

Please have a look at the following revision SPaG activities http://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/ks2/english/spelling_grammar

Year 5 – Have been really getting into their class text “Call of the Wild” by Jack London and turning calculations into exciting number sentences. They have also been looking at the effect of pulleys on the force needed to lift an object http://americanliterature.com/author/jack-london/book/the-call-of-the-wild/summary

Year 4 – Have been working on their stage presence with a selection of speaking and listening activities and have been learning to multiply and divide 3 and 4 digit numbers by

10, 100 and 1000. Try:- http://nrich.maths.org/8958

Year 3 – Have been learning different strategies to add 3 digit numbers mentally. They have also been writing non-fiction descriptions and learning about the rockcycle and the three different types of rock. Try:- http://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/ks2/science/materials/rocks_soils/read/1

Year 2 – Have been learning about number sequences in maths and time connectives and adjectives in English. They are also learning about animal habitats and have been writing emails to Steve Backshaw

Try http://www.topmarks.co.uk/interactive.aspx?cat=10 for some games involving number sequences

Year 1 – Have had an exciting week to start their topic “Homes under the Hammer”. They have been learning to find 10 more or 10 less than a number and have been using adjectives to describe fairy-tale houses. http://www.topmarks.co.uk/maths-games/5-7-years/additionand-subtraction

Year R – Have been having lots of fun looking at ladybirds through a magnifying glass and writing about what they can see. They have also been learning to subtract by adding and removing ladybirds from leaves.

Talk Topic

“Do you think children should be allowed to vote in the general election?”

The discussion could include:

What is a general election?

What does democracy mean?

Scotland are looking to reduce the voting age to 16, do you think this is a good thing?

Have a look at the following site for further information http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-30778765

Medicine in School

We can only administer medication in school and on school trips and residentials when it is prescribed by a doctor. The medication needs to be in the original packaging with the packet clearly labelled by a pharmacist. The original package must also include the original patient information leaflet. Antibiotics can only be administered if they are prescribed 4 times a day.

If it is necessary for your child to have prescribed medication in school, the medication must be brought to the school office where you will be asked to complete a consent form. I have attached a letter with further information on medicines in school.

Parent Reading Workshop

We are organising a short Parent Workshop designed to help children make good progress with their reading. This was initially organised with the volunteers who kindly give their time to listen to readers in school but we would like to extend this welcome to any parents who would like to attend. The workshop will be held on Wednesday 6th May at 9.00am for approximately half an hour, and refreshments will be provided. Please advise the school office if you wish to attend.

Parent Readers wanted

Are you able to help listen to readers and help them make progress? Year 1 are looking for adults to help them with their reading on Mondays and Wednesdays. If you are able to help please let the office know or contact Mrs Bond.

Eco Schools

After many meetings, planning and communication with the rest of the school, the Eco

Committee are very proud to announce that Westbourne Primary School has been awarded the Bronze Eco School Award! Their commitment to helping our school become an Eco

School is evident on the Eco notice board opposite Year 5 and through the posters displayed around the school. To keep up to date with what the Eco Committee have been up to and watch our Bird Box Project webcam, why don't you take a look at the new link on our school website.
