P6C Newsletter Term 2 – October 2015 Welcome back, I hope that you all had an enjoyable holiday. We look forward to another busy term in P6. Bikeability I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of you who volunteered your time during the Bikeability training. It was greatly appreciated and we could not have done this training without you. I would also like to mention that I was impressed with the overall behaviour of the children when we were out on the roads. Please encourage your child to continue demonstrating this safe and sensible behaviour when cycling on the roads. Our Timetable We will be having PE on a Thursday; well done for the speedy return of PE kits after the holidays. Please remember that for safety, long hair should be tied back and ear-rings removed or covered for PE lessons. On a Tuesday, the class will have Music with Miss Watt and will be taught Science by Mrs Murray on a Wednesday. Mrs Koup will continue to teach German to the class on a Thursday. We will have fortnightly visits to the library, our next visit will be on Tuesday 3rd November. The children will be encouraged to choose a book to read for enjoyment or a specific purpose during this time. The remaining subjects in the curriculum will be taught throughout the week. Homework Homework will continue to be handed out on Thursdays to be completed and handed in the following Tuesday. This will include a literacy task, a maths task and one other additional activity per week to consolidate what we are doing in class. The focus of this will differ in relation to what has been done in class. Reading will also be given home, generally following a set pattern. Reminders The classroom can become very warm so it is important that each child brings their own water bottle to school if possible. This can be refilled as required in class. Children are encouraged to bring the appropriate equipment to school - pencils, rubber, ruler, sharpener, coloured pencils etc, to enable them to complete their work. As you know the weather is very changeable at the moment, please ensure that your child brings a waterproof jacket, with a hood, to school every day. Class Work Due to the time demands of Bikeability last term, we are continuing our ‘Research Skills Through The Victorians’ topic into the beginning of this term. We will be focusing on how the Victorians shaped today’s society and how their inventions have impacted our lives. Towards the middle of the term, we will start our new topic ‘World of Work’. This topic aims to educate the children on the skills required when looking for a job, applying and when in a workplace. We hope to develop an Enterprise project alongside this. In Maths this term we will be focusing on areas of Numeracy including Multiplication and Division and the link between them, Place Value and Money. When appropriate these will be linked to real life situations to enable the children to apply their skills. In Literacy we will be learning more about persuasive writing. Through a variety of contexts, pupils will creating letters, posters and leaflets with the aim to persuade someone else’s opinion. We are currently participating in the Scottish Book Trust Awards, we have to read 4 different novels and vote on our favourite one. The children are enjoying the opportunity to contribute in whole class reading activities. We also hope to indulge in some festive crafts when we reach December and we can mention the ‘C’ word!
