Coventry Probus Club Newsletter December 2015 As we head towards the end of this year, it is time to reflect on what the Club has achieved the past 12 months. Our monthly meetings held in St James Church Hall (and during the refurbishment of the Church Hall in the Church) have been well supported. The Club has had excellent Speakers during this period covering many varied subjects. Annual Dinner 2015 The Club Annual Dinner was held at the Holiday Inn in Kenilworth, when 63 Members and their Guests enjoyed a splendid meal. Annual Holiday 2015 The five day holiday to Scotland was supported by 28 Members, Partners and Friends, and was enjoyed by all who went. The Winnock Hotel in Drymen (15 miles north of Glasgow) provided excellent accommodation with good food and drink and we were entertained by the piping of the Haggis. Visits during the holiday included a stop at Gretna Green, a journey and short cruise on the Falkirk Wheel, a tour of the Queen’s floating Palace, ‘The Royal Yacht Britannia’ and a guided tour of the Royal Park in Edinburgh. Probus Barbecue (16th July 2015) The Annual Barbecue was once again hosted by Veronica and Bernard Brownhill and was blessed by fine weather. We cooked our own meat on the BBQ and enjoyed salads and desserts provided by our Ladies, all washed down with a glass of wine (or two). Probus Cheese & Wine and Film Night (29th October 2015) Our Annual Cheese & Wine and Film Night was held in October 2015, when 23 Members and their guests enjoyed ‘The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel’. As the work at St James Church Hall had not been completed, it was thought that the event may have to be cancelled, but thanks go to the Vicar of St Martin’s Church who stepped in at the 11th hour and made a room available. Members Annual Lunch (6th November 2015) The Festival Pub, Fenside Avenue once again provided us with an excellent lunch for 21 Members , following our November General Meeting. Thursford Christmas Spectacular (14th to 16th November 2015) The last event in which some of our Members participated was a trip to see the World Famous ‘Thursford Christmas Spectacular’ - a truly magnificent extravaganza of Music, Dancing and Singing. The group stayed two nights at the Wensum Valley Golf Club Hotel, near Norwich. Music Group The music Group well organised by our Chairman Jeff Bulow has met regularly during the year, with different Members giving a presentation of their choice of music. Rambling Group The monthly Club rambles over the Summer months have been very successful, although the number of Ramblers has diminished. However, those who successfully completed each challenge, thoroughly enjoyed their morning in the fresh air. Several of our ‘more mature members’ joined the group for a Pub Lunch after each walk. Dates for your Diary What we have to look forward to? Annual Carol Service The annual Carol Service will be held at St James Church on Wednesday, 16th December 2015, at 3.00pm. This will be held on Thursday, 31st March 2016, and will include a three course meal with a glass of house wine or a soft drink, at a cost of £25.00 per person.
