CLASS TITLE: SANITATION AND SAFETY SPECIALIST
ALLOCATION FACTOR(S)
This is work conducting sanitation and safety inspections of regulated establishments for compliance
with statutory and rule requirements; and assisting and advising individuals and organizations in
sanitation, safety, and hygienic aspects of environmental health programs.
EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED:

Inspects various establishments and facilities such as public lodging and food service
establishments for compliance with environmental health and sanitation regulations, fire
safety, LP gas rules and regulations, and other safety or sanitation related areas.
Investigates food induced illnesses and environmental sanitation nuisance complaints.
Collects fines, penalties and delinquent license fees.
Recommends procedures for rodent and vermin control.
Gathers evidence and participates in legal actions.
Maintains records and files of inspections.
Confers with and educates the public, builders, owners, public officials and civic groups
concerning disease control, sanitation and health regulations.
Issues licenses to public lodging and food service establishments.
Conducts field studies to monitor health or sanitation standards.
Provides consultation and prepares reports dealing with safety and sanitation problems.
Identifies job-related hazards due to toxic gases fumes and vapors.
Coordinates activities with federal, state and municipal environmental safety and health
agencies.
Conducts regulatory inspections of public food service establishments and lodging facilities.
Prepares reports to document compliance or non-compliance of licensure, sanitary equipment
and posting requirements.
Conducts interviews, takes statements, collects evidence and prepares investigative reports for
serious violations.

Interprets and explains the significance of public health laws, rules and other related sanitation
and safety standards.
Testifies at court and administrative hearings and interacts with legal staff, complaint and
board offices, State Attorney's office and other regulatory agencies.
Serves administrative complaints, notice to show cause, and final orders.
Maintains inspection activity data and prepares administrative reports.
Inspects food establishments such as supermarkets, convenience stores, food processors and
warehouses for compliance wit sanitation, cleanliness, labeling and other food regulation
requirements.
Performs related work as required.

Knowledge of the methods of data collection.
Knowledge of the principles and techniques of effective communication.
Ability to collect, record and analyze technical data relating to sanitation and safety standards.
Ability to understand and apply applicable rules, regulations, policies and procedures relating to
the safety and sanitation inspections of regulated establishments.
Ability to plan, organize and coordinate work assignments.
Ability to communicate effectively.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
Ability to deal with the public in a professional and courteous manner.
Ability to utilize problem-solving techniques.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS




A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major course of study in one
of the physical or natural sciences, environmental health, sanitary science, public health,
engineering, hotel or restaurant management, criminal justice, law enforcement, or an area of
health care, nutrition, or dietetics; or
A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university and one year of professional
environmental health, regulatory inspection, investigative work, health care, nutrition, or hotel
or restaurant experience; or
A master's degree from an accredited college or university in one of the educational areas
described above.
Field or laboratory experience in environmental or public health, a physical or natural science,
engineering, or experience in hotel or restaurant management, hotel or restaurant inspection,
food establishment operations, food sanitation or quality control, regulatory inspection,
investigative work, health care, or nutrition can substitute on a year-for-year basis for the
required college education.
