CLASS TITLE: ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH SPECIALIST - SES
ALLOCATION FACTOR(S)
This is professional work inspecting, assisting, and advising individuals and organizations in sanitation and hygienic aspects of environmental health programs; performing field studies and laboratory tests as part of an environmental health program; or inspecting establishments regulated by the
Department of Business and Professional Regulation for compliance with statutory and rule requirements.
EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED:

 Inspects various establishments and facilities such as schools, university buildings and laboratories, day care centers, foster homes, nursing homes, food service establishments, migrant camps, swimming pools and waste treatment facilities for compliance with environmental health and sanitation regulations.
 Investigates food induced illnesses and environmental sanitation nuisance complaints.
 Collects fines, penalties and delinquent license fees.

Performs duties associated with a comprehensive rabies control program.

Gathers evidence and participates in legal actions.

Recommends procedures for vermin and rodent control.

Maintains records and files of inspections.

Confers with and educates the public, builders, owners, public officials and civic groups concerning disease control, sanitation and health regulations.

Collects water, food and other samples for laboratory analysis and environmental quality studies.

Issues health permits and licenses to restaurants.

Reviews construction plans for establishments for compliance with sanitation requirements.
 Performs epidemiological surveys.
 Conducts laboratory and field studies to monitor health or sanitation threats.

Provides consultation and prepares reports dealing with hygiene problems.

Responds to occupation-related complaints and emergencies.

Identifies job-related hazards due to toxic gases, fumes and vapors.

Advises industry in proper handling and disposal of toxic and hazardous materials.

Coordinates activities with federal, state and municipal environmental safety and health agencies.
 Conducts regulatory inspections of cosmetology salons and schools, barber shops and schools, massage establishments, funeral establishments, direct disposer establishments, incinerator facilities and veterinary clinics for compliance relative to licensure, equipment operation and safety, and sanitary conditions and procedures.
 Prepares reports to document compliance or non-compliance of licensure, sanitary, equipment and posting requirements.
 Interviews, takes statements, collects evidence and prepares investigative reports for serious violations.
 Reviews plans and specifications with public health regulations; issues septic tank permits; and interprets health laws, rules and local ordinances.

Serves as the food hygiene coordinator, enforcement officer, or training officer for the sanitation staff in a county health department.

Conducts inspections of shellfish and blue crab handling, processing and packaging facilities for compliance with public health laws; reviews plans and specifications for construction or remodeling of the facilities; interprets and explains the significance of public health laws; recommends state certification of facilities satisfactorily complying with these laws.

Testifies at court and administrative hearings and interacts with departmental legal, complaint and board offices, State Attorney's office and other regulatory agencies.

Serves subpoenas and administrative complaints.

Maintains inspection activity data and prepares administrative reports.

Performs related work as required.
