LSP Spelling
Good spelling is a fundamental part of a son's literacy development. You son will
learn how to spell vocabulary regularly as part of the literacy activities that are led
by his form tutor and also through work with his subject teachers.
We encourage our pupils to learn from words that have spelt incorrectly in their
written work. Your son’s teachers will identify key vocabulary that has not been
spelt correctly and will ask him to write out these words three times for extra
practice.
How to learn weekly spellings
We suggest that your son learns to spell vocabulary using the 'Look, Cover, Write,
Check' method. This encourages your son to 'see' and 'hear' the word, as well as
check to see if he has spelt the word correctly. Using this method your son should:





look at a spelling word;
cover the spelling word;
visualize the covered word in the mind;
write the word from memory;
check what has been written with the uncovered word.
As our pupils have different preferred learning styles, you son may choose to learn
to spell words in a different way. Here are some other methods that your son could
use:




find words within the word (there's a 'hen' in 'when'!) ;
break the word up into smaller parts (Wed + nes + day = Wednesday) ;
break the word up into sounds (th-a-nk) ;
make up a silly sentence using the letters (big elephants cause accidents
under small elephants spells 'because') ;
 say the word as it is written;
 find a word that rhymes with it: is the spelling the same?;
 learning Spelling rules, see Literacy Guide for Parents.
