WEEKLY SPELLINGS/WORD FAMILIES
Autumn 1 Week 2
Objective - Year 4 spelling review.
Dear Parents/Carers –The words below combine a range of spelling rules covered in Year
4. Areas covered: plurals, possessive apostrophes, -ous words, -sure words, -gue words,
‘sh’ sound spelt ‘ch’, ‘k’ sound spelt ‘ch’, ‘s’ sound spelt ‘sc’ and ‘c’ makes the ‘s’ sound. The
apostrophe must be positioned in the correct place for a correct answer.
The children will complete an activity every week where they will complete sentences with
missing words. The sentences will incorporate the words below. The score will be recorded
in the Home School diary every Friday. The real success will be when your child starts to
transfer these words, correctly spelt in their everyday writing, not just when completing a
weekly challenge.

Objective - ough letter strings.
Dear Parents/Carers –The words below include the -ough letter string. This can be used to
spell a variety of different sounds, e.g. ‘uff’ in rough, tough and enough and ‘aw’ as in fought.
The children will complete an activity every week where they will complete sentences with
missing words. The sentences will incorporate the words below. The score will be recorded
in the Home School diary every Friday. The real success will be when your child starts to
transfer these words, correctly spelt in their everyday writing, not just when completing a
weekly challenge.
