Spelling Routine! 1. Select new words – 3 from your writing and 2 from our word wall. Add these words to your weekly list and check that the spelling correct. 2. Ask your teacher to confirm that you have entered the words correctly. 3. Look at the word and see what parts make it tricky for you to spell. Critical features for you to remember might be: Letter patterns Silent letters Word endings Double letters 4. Think about how to learn each word. Here are some suggestions: Break the word into smaller parts See if there is a smaller word inside the word Make up a mnemonic (red – rarely eats deserts) Use a spelling generalization Find out the meaning Write the word in a sentence 5. Practice learning your words. 6. Ask a partner to test you on your words each day. 7. Record your results with a checkmark or an X. 8. When you have spelled a word correctly 3 times in a row, highlight the word. When you have 5 highlighted words request a teacher test by placing your word list in the “Time for a Test” bin. 9. When you spell the words correctly on the teacher test it is time to transfer the word to your word collection.
