Course Description: This course combines topics from college algebra and trigonometry and prepares the student for analytic geometry and calculus. Additionally, this course is designed to meet the requirements of the Deer Valley Mathematics Curriculum and the Arizona State Standards. Suggested Classroom Items: 3-ring binder, graph paper, pencils, dry erase marker, colored pen, eraser, and graphing calculator; TI-83 or TI-84 is suggested. I will be using the TI 84 in class. You may be able to check out a calculator through the bookstore. See me for the paperwork. You will need to fill out the form and have it signed by a parent or guardian. Your grade will be determined by assessment of your proficiency in the standards for this course. Practice work will be assigned and should be completed in order to gain proficiency in skills. Students that do not develop and practice skills through these assignments are not likely to pass this course. Attendance Policy: Excessive absences or tardiness may result in loss of high school credit for this class. If you have 5 hours or more of unexcused absences, you may be withdrawn from the dual enrollment course. Make Up Policy: Being absent on the day before a test does NOT excuse the student from taking the test if he/she was present the day the test was announced. Extra Help: If you find yourself in need of help with math, many students find it helpful to get together after school and form study groups to work together to help each other. You are welcome to work in my classroom after school. Community service/CAS hours opportunity: BGHS is implementing an intervention program to help students that need support in algebra 1-2. During the advisory period, which will take place on Tuesdays after second period, freshmen students will go to a designated area to get one on one help from you! Yes, you can use your advisory time to be a tutor and a mentor for the younger students. I will train you as to how to be an effective tutor. Additionally, I will always provide you with the worksheet for each tutoring session ahead of time, and we will go over it to make sure you are comfortable with the material. This is a great opportunity for both you and the younger students. It also helps you keep your skills sharp. I will provide more detailed information about this program in the near future, but please consider participating in the program. You can make a big difference for our younger students.
