Instructor: Contact Information: Charlestown High School 2014-2015 Course Syllabus Language Lab I Mrs. Lisa Weber lweber @gcs.k12.in.us 812-256-3328 ext. 210 Webpage: www2.gcs.k12.in.us/lweber Course Overview: This year, most freshmen have been scheduled in two blocks of English classes. You will have a regular English course, as well as a Lab course. The English Course counts as an English credit and the Lab course counts as an elective credit. This course is not optional and credit is received for the course. The course was designed to help prepare freshmen for the ECA graduation exam that they will be required to take during their Sophomore year. Students must pass the test in order to graduate, so the lab course is essential in providing support for students who will be taking the graduation exam. Course Description: This course focuses mostly on Reading Comprehension, Writing, and vocabulary skills. The students will be reading in class, taking notes, doing vocabulary exercises and writing response pieces. The course is designed to follow along with the skills being presented in the regular English 9 course. Homework: Students will have homework in regular English class, but will not have homework in Lab class. Work in the lab class will be completed during the school day. This is nice because it gives students less work to do at home. However, students must complete all work in class in order to be successful. This means that attendance is very important. Grades and Make-up work: Students will be graded on work completed in class, as well as through tests, writing, quizzes, and vocabulary exercises. If a student is absent from class, it is his or her responsibility to collect any makeup work from the teacher in a timely manner. District policy will be followed as far as absent/make-up work is concerned. Course Materials: Chromebook- fully charged each day Composition Book (This does not include the one needed for English 9) Notebook paper (loose leaf, not spiral) Two-pocket folder Pencil or pen (blue or black pens only) Reading Counts! Book (English classes will visit CHS Media Center) Hall Pass (Given by teacher-students will receive three passes per nine weeks and will not be allowed to leave class without the hall pass card. Therefore, it is imperative that it is kept in a safe place. Replacement cards will not be given. Unused passes may be redeemed for extra credit at the end of grading period.) ***Supplies should be replenished throughout the year as needed. Classroom Expectations: As high school students, there is a certain amount of respect, honesty, and self-control which is expected in order to be successful. Students should understand that high school is no place for any behaviors that detract from the learning environment. This is the “big league”- what you do here shapes your future. Be sure the choices you make are ones that benefit you and those around you in a positive way. Please follow these expectations: 1. Be responsible for self and upholding classroom expectations. 2. Come to class on time, prepared with necessary materials, and be ready to learn. 3. Accept that there will be consequences for poor choices and take advantage of opportunity for change. Tardy Policy: Students are to be in class and ready to work when the bell rings. If there is an assignment due, have it ready to hand in at the beginning of class. Students should start working on the warm-up assignment as soon as the bell rings. Students who are late to class are expected to complete/submit an admission slip upon entering. After three unexcused tardies in a nine week grading period, students will be referred to the office. Language Lab I Mrs. Weber Please discuss this course syllabus with your parent(s) or guardian(s).
