Welcome to Academic Support! I look forward to working with you and having a
successful and rewarding school year!
What is Academic Support?
Academic Support class provides students with additional classroom time to
work on assignments for their academic courses with the support of a
classroom teacher. I am here to help you grow as a student and to help you
develop and strengthen the literacy skills, academic skills, and life skills that
are essential to being successful in high school and beyond.
What will we be doing in class?
Much of our time will be spent working on assignments you have been given
by your other teachers.
In addition, we may also have mini-lessons on topics such as:
 organization
 study habits
 text features
 reading strategies (ex: inferencing)
 paragraph writing
Following a mini-lesson, I may ask the class to do a brief activity that allows us
to put something into practice.

Academic Support is NOT …
 Study Hall – We will be working closely together on work you are
assigned.
 Time to catch up on your zzzzs! Please be awake, alert, and engaged!
Your head should NEVER be resting on your desk! Your eyes should
ALWAYS be open!
 Social Hour. Our classroom talk will be friendly and productive. It will focus
on school-related topics and ways we can be successful in school and in
life.
What if I don't have any work to do?
Let's be realistic. We all know that the chance of not having ANY work in ANY of
your high school classes is very slim. PLEASE BE PREPARED by coming to
class with assigned work. If you are not prepared, I will provide work for you to
do! Please bring an independent reading book with you every time you
come to class for times when you might finish early.
EXPECTATIONS
What You Can Expect

You can expect that I will greet you at the door each day with a smile.

You can expect that I will answer any questions you may have about your
work. If I do not know the answer right away, I will find the answer quickly
for you.

You can expect that I will work hard to help you be successful and help
you improve in areas in which you struggle or wish to improve.

What You Can Expect cont’d

You can expect me to treat you courteously and fairly.

You can expect that ALL of the rules in the Bulldog Handbook and Student
Code of Conduct will be enforced in my classroom. Please keep your
electronic devices off and out of sight. Enjoy your food in the
cafeteria, not in the classroom. (Water is OK.)
What I Expect
 I expect you to use your time in class WISELY and PRODUCTIVELY.

We may use computers from time to time and you are expected to use
them productively for school-related work ONLY!

I expect you to arrive on time to class, prepared with everything you
need: pen/pencil, paper, class assignments, and independent reading
book.

I expect you to treat EVERYONE in the classroom with courtesy and
respect, and I expect you to respect all the property in the classroom.

I encourage you to participate in class discussions and to ask questions.
This shows me that you are engaged (and alive!) and helps build positive
relationships in our class!

Please take care of bathroom breaks and going to your locker BEFORE
class has started. I trust you not to take advantage of our restroom pass –
only use it if you absolutely have to and return promptly. If you become a
“frequent flyer,” you may lose restroom privileges. If you do not return
promptly to class, you may be written up for a class cut.
