Welcome to Nogales High School's Child Development class! This class is part of the Career Pathway
for Family & Consumer Sciences. I’m excited to work with you in developing your awareness and
understanding of child development. I will constantly update grades on homelink so you can stay current
with your grade. If any parents/guardians have questions or concerns about their student’s progress,
feel free to contact me (contact information is written above). I look forward to a successful and wonderful
school year! Go Nobles!
Course Description:
Students will learn about the importance of prenatal care essential for a healthy baby. Proper parenting
techniques for the newborn infant and preschooler are emphasized. The care and understanding of
developmental needs and characteristics of the whole child from prenatal through adolescents is
covered. Special topics such as child abuse, latch key children, children of alcoholics and divorces are
studied.
*We will be covering topics that may be sensitive to some students or that parents may choose not to have their son
or daughter exposed to. The potentially controversial topics that will be covered in Child Development are:
sexuality, STDs, abstinence and contraceptives, conception, pregnancy, prenatal care and childbirth. Due to the
sensitive nature of these topics, I require all students to have their parent/legal guardian sign and return the form
attached. This gives consent to enrollment in this class and to the material covered in the district course outline.
In addition to these topics, students will be working with electronic Ready-or-Not babies to gain a better
understanding of the responsibilities of being a parent or working with babies (students are responsible for the
doll while it is checked out to them, any damage done to the doll will be billed to their student account with ASB).

Class Expectations
1. You must do your own work. Cheating and plagiarism will result in a 0% grade for that assignment, test,
quiz, and/or project.
2. Be respectful to self, school staff, teacher, substitutes, and peers.
3. Cell phones and music players should not be seen during class time. One warning will be given if
the teacher sees your cell phone. If the cell phone is seen after this warning, it will be confiscated
and sent to the office.
Discipline: Students are encouraged to take responsibility for their own behavior. Students who
display a lack of self-control should expect teacher-directed discipline measures- verbal warning, phone
call and/or email home, parent/guardian conference, and/or referral to administration.
Attendance & Tardies: Attendance and punctuality is vital to successful learning. School attendance
and tardy policies will apply. Please see the school’s handbook on these policies.
Make-up Work: Any work missed due to an EXCUSED absence can be made up. Deadlines for makeup work are posted quarterly. No make-up work can be turned in during the following quarter(s).
Late Work: Late work is not encouraged and should be avoided at all costs. Late work will be
accepted for only 50% credit. Late work will not be accepted after the end of each quarter.
FHA-HERO: All students who completed or are enrolled in a Family & Consumer Science class (child
development, fashion design, advanced fashion design, foods & nutrition, gourmet & international foods, and life
management) are eligible to become a member in the pre-professional organization called FHA-HERO.
This organization focuses on developing career and leadership skills. It provides opportunities for
members to meet professionals and participate in local, regional, state and national competitions.
