A CLOSER LOOK AT OUR FIRST GRADE DAY OPENING ACTIVITIES: 15-20 MINUTES A DAY Teacher: Students: -greet students at the east outside doors -have a student hold the inside door as the rest of the class walks to the classroom -read hot lunch menu (hanging on classroom door) -take attendance and breakfast/lunch count (Record this in Power School/computer) -greet the teacher -enter the first grade classroom -go to his/her desk -place backpack/schoolbag on the floor by his/her desk; -take out folder, book bag, cold lunch, etc; place these items on his/her desk -take backpack/schoolbag and line up at the classroom door (star rug) -walk to lockers (down the hall by the Kindergarten Classroom) -place backpack/school bag on top shelf of locker; hang clothing on hooks; place shoes/boots on the bottom -stand sideways beside their lockers -return to the classroom when everyone is ready/when teacher tells them -return to their desks -check folder for notes/papers/etc, these should be placed in teacher’s mailbox/blue tray; -exchange books in book bags -place folder and bookbag in their mailbox (folder on bottom, bookbag on top) -vote/question of the day -sit on half circle carpet/ready for the day WHOLE GROUP-CLASSROOM MEETING/MORNING MESSAGE -students share something about themselves; discuss the day; read and discuss a poem; recite Pledges; Brain Gym Act; Relaxation Activity ELA/READING WORKSHOP 5-7 minutes: Whole Group Focus Mini Lesson 10-15 minutes: Student Independent/Private Reading/CONFERENCING 1-3 minutes: Mid-Workshop Lesson 10-15 minutes: Partner Reading/CONFERENCING 5-7 minutes: Sharing Time (“What went well?”) RECESSES: 2 15 minute breaks a day of supervised outdoor activities on the east playground (indoor activities when weather prohibits being outside) MILK/SNACK BREAK: 10-15 minutes daily MATH/CALENDAR ACTIVITES: *INVESTIGATIONS -calendar (days of the week, months of the year, yesterday-today-tomorrow) -patterning/sorting -ordinal numbers -tell time (o’clock and half past) -recognize and write numbers 0-100/use a number line and hundreds chart -recognize what a set is/understand counting, more/less, greater/less, same/equal -geometry; 2 and 3 dimensional shapes -count by 1s, 2s, 5s, and 10s -place value -money and it’s value(penny, nickel, dime, quarter, half dollar, dollar) -measurement (length, units, inches, centimeters, weight, pounds, kilograms, capacity, cups, pints, quarts, gallons, liters) -fractions -addition and subtraction facts up to 20/related facts/fact families -solve story/word problems ELA/INTERACTIVE THINK/READ ALOUD LUNCH: 15-20 minutes daily ELA and/or computer lab time READ ALOUD (chapter book) HANDWRITING songs, brain activities/crossovers, “Handwriting Without Tears” PHONICS WORD WORKS/WORD STUDY COMPUTER LAB: -ESSENTIAL SKILLS-SUPER PHONICS AND MEASUREMENT GRADE ONE; INVESTIGATIONS/SHAPES; MUSIC: Mrs. Twogood PHY. ED.: Mrs. Kussy TEAM TIME/INTERVENTION -guided reading groups -individual conferences -assessments -ipads and/or computers -working with words (need to REMEMBER fruit and veggie snack time) 1:50-2:30 ELA/WRITING WORKSHOP 5-7 minutes: Whole Group Focus Mini Lesson 10-15 minutes: Student Independent Work/CONFERENCING 1-3 minutes: Mid-Workshop Lesson 10-15 minutes: Student Independent/CONFERENCING 5-7 minutes: Sharing Time SOCIAL STUDIES/SCIENCE/HEALTH: ART: usually Fridays CLOSING ACTIVITIES: Whole group; discuss the day/sequence the day’s events/reminders and/or announcements Students: -get mail from mailbox -take mail to his/her desk -place mail/papers in his/her folder -stay standing at their desks until everyone is ready to go -line up on star rug -go to lockers -place folders/mail and book bags in his/her backpack -put on outdoor clothing -line up sideways beside their lockers -tell the teacher where they are going and give the Teacher a high five or hug Teacher: -check mailboxes and lockers—make sure all areas are empty/clean -assist students that need help -stand at lockers-dismiss students that are ready to go -give high fives or hugs as students leave for the day
