Work day for PBLs and Science Inquiry Projects

Field Trip

There is a Brain Pop video on Weather that can be shown to introduce the next unit. There is also a

BrainPop on Climate. Both will help support work we will be doing later in the week.

Anticipatory Set/Hook: T will ask students to make observations about today’s weather. We will study weather this week.

Go over PowerPoint about weather instruments

Students glue instrument notes/weather situations in their journal.

Students use their notes to name the instrument that goes with each situation.

Have students glue Daily Weather chart in their journal. Record weather data for Roanoke, TX and

Roanoke, VA using weather.com or another source. Discuss differences in the weather of the two locations. Students will add data to this page each day this week to compare the weather.

We will / Objective: observe, measure, record, and compare day to day weather changes that include air temperature, wind direction and precipitation.

I will /Product/Task: identify weather instruments and their purpose.

POP:

Academic Language: temperature, thermometer, wind speed, precipitation, wind direction, weather vane, rain gauge, anemometer, barometer, hygrometer

Anticipatory Set/Hook: Today we will talk about temperature. Show Brainpop Jr. video: Temperature

Record the daily temperature data for Roanoke, TX and Roanoke, VA.

Discuss the two units for measuring temperature and record freezing, boiling temperatures for each, and examples of what weather is like at various temperatures in both systems.

Use weather pictures to have students identify the Fahrenheit and Celsius temperatures that match with each outdoor activity.

Practice using thermometers. Distribute thermometers to students. Read them to determine air temperature of the room. Have students hold their thumb on the bulb and read the temperature change. Are your fingers warmer of cooler than the air temperature?

Go outside to record temperatures in sun compared to shade. Have students explain differences.

Look for other locations that may have different temperatures (blacktop vs. grass). Record results and explain cause of the difference in temperature.

Assign Brainpop Questions.

We will / Objective: observe, measure, record, and compare day to day weather changes that include air temperature, wind direction and precipitation.

I will /Product/Task: record and compare temperatures; answer questions about temperature.

POP: temperature charts to collect data

Academic Language: temperature, thermometer, wind speed, precipitation, wind direction, weather vane, rain gauge, anemometer, barometer, hygrometer

Anticipatory Set/Hook: Today we will learn more about how weather data is reported using http://weatherwizkids.com/ .

Show students the website.

Give pairs or small groups of students the weather task cards. Each student receives an answer sheet to record their answers.

Using the weather forecasting, weather instrument, and weather word links, students complete the task cards.

We will / Objective: observe, measure, record, and compare day to day weather changes that include air temperature, wind direction and precipitation.

I will /Product/Task: complete the weather task cards using weatherwizkids.com.
