MLA Citation Basics
Parenthetical Citations- Using quotes and citing sources in the paper
MLA style requires 2 main things :
author’s last name & page number
Direct Quotes- citation must go directly after the quote.
“Beowulf’s greatest triumph was to slay the monster Grendel” (Smith 56).
Other versions- (author used to introduce the quote)
According to John Smith, “Beowulf’s greatest triumph was to slay the monster Grendel”
(56).
Paraphrasing- must use your own words- in your own order. * Still must cite source
-Citation must be used after the cited info (may be more than 1 sentence).
Some think that slaying Grendel was Beowulf’s biggest victory (Smith 56).
When author is unknown, (often on internet) use the web site name in place of author’s name.
n.a.= no author n.p. = no page (internet sources may list p# for paragraph)
