Classroom Goals
Algebra 1 – We will leave this class with the knowledge and skills needed for success in future mathematics courses. We
will pass the Algebra I STAAR exam.
Guidelines for Success
You are in a challenging class; never forget this. If you wish to be successful, do these three things in order of
importance.
1. Do all your homework. Homework is assigned to provide necessary practice to solidify concepts securely in your
mind. No matter how simple the concept, I have assigned the homework as my experience has shown me it is
needed to be successful on the test. You do yourself a disservice to ignore it.
2. If you struggle, tell me before the day of the test. Ask questions. Do not wait until the test is graded to let me
know that you are having difficulty with a concept. The sooner I know, the sooner I can help you. After the test, I
will still help you to understand, but it will not be as useful to your grade.
3. Attend tutoring, which is free by the way. Some concepts are more difficult than others. Some students need
more individual attention than others, and that’s OK. Just be sure to take advantage of the resources available
to you.
Classroom Expectations and Consequences
Classroom expectations:




Be polite (respect everyone in the classroom and
observe all school rules, policies and procedures).
Be prompt (in your assigned seat and working when
the bell rings).
Be prepared (bring all materials needed for class).
Be productive (follow directions the first time they
are given).
Consequences for Violators:
1st offense: Verbal reminder
2nd offense: Teacher/Student conference
3rd offense: Phone call to parent/guardian
4th offense: Discipline referral
Grades
Grading scale: will be standard for the district – A: 100-90; B: 89-80; C: 79-75; D: 74-70; F: 69-0. Grades will be separated
into two categories.
Summative grades, which include all tests, will consist of 70% of your final numeric grade.
Formative grades, which consist collectively of homework, daily grades, quizzes, etc. will make up 30% of your grade.
Late work: Late work will be accepted up to 5 school days after the due date with a penalty of 20 points per day. Work
due during an excused absence will be due the next day the student returns to class for no penalty. Work due during an
unexcused absence will be considered late. On the fifth day the student will receive an unchangeable grade of zero.
Retakes: Reassessments can have a maximum score of 85. Retakes must take place within one week of the original
assessment. Students must make and understand corrections to original test and complete all formative assignments to
be eligible for a retake.
Online Work: When there is an online assignment students will be informed of when the assignment “opens” or
becomes available and the due date. Students should complete online work and should not assume they have extra time
to do an assignment if they are absent on the date it opens or on the deadline date. Students should make every effort
to access the assignment via their own electronic device or a library computer.
Academic Dishonesty: It goes without saying, but cheating will not be tolerated. Except for group work, any
communication, written or verbal, not with the instructor during a test or quiz will be considered cheating. Any student
found cheating will be given a score of one for that assignment. This is to distinguish it from unfinished work.
Tutoring Schedule
Tuesday and Friday AM 6:45 to 7:15
Classroom Procedures
Entering the Room: As students enter the class they should make certain they are prepared. This may include things
such as sharpening a pencil, picking up a calculator, etc. Class begins at the bell. It is expected that when the bell rings all
students will be in their seats working on the warm up. Any homework due will be on their desk for inspection. The
teacher will verify homework and take attendance. Students may not loiter in the classroom.
Tardy Policy: As soon as the tardy bell rings the door will shut. If a student is on the outside of the door they are tardy
and will be expected to quickly go to the closest office for OSOT (operation start on time). Then quickly return to class.
Supplies: All students are expected to come to class with three things: A pencil, something to write on (paper,
notebook, etc.), a binder with dividers to keep track of warm ups/homework/notes/etc. If you do not have a pencil you
will need to borrow one before the bell rings. If you must borrow from me you must exchange your ID badge.
Activities Calendar: Students are expected to keep track of assignment due dates, test dates, etc. These dates will be
posted on the activities calendar located in the room. Please use an agenda to keep track of these dates.
Grade Status: Students should track their grades using the online system (HAC). If a student needs to discuss his or her
current status in the class please approach me before or after class. If it is a matter that requires more attention please
make arrangements to stay after school during tutorial hours.
Absences: Please Don’t. But if an absence is unavoidable, the student is responsible for all work and lessons during an
absence. Students who have been absent should check the activities calendar and make-up box for the day or days they
were absent. Students will have as many days as they were absent to turn in any make-up work without consequence.
Students may need to ask a peer for notes or attend tutorials in order to complete their assignment. Missed tests or
quizzes must be made up after or before school within a week. Work or tests not made-up within that time will be
considered late work.
Passes: There is a school wide no pass zone during the first and last ten minutes of every class. Please understand the
importance of class time and make every attempt to take care of personal things during the passing period. If there is an
emergency and the student must leave the room, they must have a pass. Each student will be allowed six passes each
nine-weeks.
Dismissal: I will dismiss class, not the bell. Students are dismissed from their seats. The class will not be dismissed until
all students are seated and all classroom materials are returned neatly to their proper places. The calculator caddy will
be checked before dismissal.
Electronic Devices: No cell phones, cameras, portable gaming, music playback devices, etc. are permitted in the
classroom. Keep your cell phone silent and put away. The student will be informed ahead of time when electronic
devices will be used for instructional purposes. This is the only time they will be allowed.
Food and Drink: You may bring a closed container of water into class. No other food or drink is permitted by school
policy.
I will be following all school policies.
