There is currently a lack of classes available for bridge students, and IE will likely get
150 new students for Winter Quarter. More Humanities sections at high-demand times
are needed, PHYS 110, a mid-morning ENGL&101, MATH& 151 and another BUS&
101 section in the morning. Many International students do not have transportation
available for evening classes. Cynthia will send Bob a copy of IE’s “wish list” and a
conversation with Kathie needs to occur. 3:00 – 5:00 classes are ok for IE students but
the worry is we end up with classes that are completely IE. As we continue to grow, we
will need more courses that fit for these students. Division Planning Councils have to
begin to think about this. This is a great discussion for one of the smaller groups from
the Retention Committee to see which courses are the most popular for IE students. An
element of Professional Development would be how you handle an international class.
Faculty need to have professional pedagogical skills to do that.
A topic to take to the
Student Success
Coordinating Committee
(SSCC) is how to
anticipate further growth in
International Education and
how to work together to
make that happen.
IE currently has admitted 284 students for WQ which is a record. Last year the final
number was 180. Even if we yield 50%, we will still have 142 (the high range is 190).
IE is at 950 total now (not counting HTC Program). We will definitely go over 1,000.
Continuing students have not all enrolled yet. As we continue to grow it continues to
place a burden on the Student Affairs infrastructure. We need to evaluate the impact on
the current college infrastructure. Bob asked that Kim start tracking incidents that
impact this. We need to track this so we know what the impacts are.
Kim will commence
tracking matters that
impact the infrastructure of
Student Affairs that the
growth of IE enrollment
has affected.
Many IE students don’t understand there is a physical presence needed for a proctored
test in online Math classes. Ann has been in contact with instructors and Delene Bryant
to have a footnote on classes that indicate when the test will be. They have helped
schedule a room faculty can proctor a test in. International Students get proctors abroad
as well. That is a possibility with all classes. We are piloting Smarter Proctor next
quarter to get students together in proctor sites around the world.

outside their job area greater than 6 months. It is important to keep an eye on this. As a
supervisor, you may want someone reclassified upward. Once an employee makes a
request there is a 60 day timeline to complete the review. The timeline for the most
recent request from Secy Supervisors exceeded the 60 days. HR got back to the
employees as promptly as possible. The rationale for the decision is one that is made
per rules that HR tries to comply with consistently. The timing of the decision and the
announcements to staff is what is required by us per contract.
Options discussed included one that was less positive than the current status; another
one is inconsistent with classification rules. Perhaps on another agenda we can review
some options discussed a few months ago if we want to build up positions to make
them greater that include specific assignments of duties and responsibilities. We have
to be prepared to pay for certain positions.
It is important for Deans to tell their staff it is their right to request a classification
review and there is a process for that. Have staff talk to the Shop Steward and Human
Resources.
Stephen said for use of your time, if you want to brainstorm possibilities, Veronica Zura
is the best expert to have. She knows the system, options, positions and duties. We
have to work within the classification system.

ELT Update
Bob
Stephen asked for collegiality around messaging to our staff. If there are questions,
let’s talk about them as administrators so we are clear.
Consultant Tom Mesaros will help SCC with a long-term Strategic Plan. Important
discussions and conversations will be launched in WQ. The more we can get people
participating, the better product we will have. We have a chance to determine who we
are. We all need to have input and be involved in the future of the college. Please
message that. Deans discussed ways to communicate with the campus. The request to
participate has to be put in context. It is us determining who we want to be. What is
our goal? How do we envision ourselves 5 years from now? We are determining our
future. We need the faculty’s opinions. This SP will have real meaning behind it. The
faculty need to hear that. It is important for Deans to message the college how
important it is they participate in the process. Deans recommended the President or
ELT send a message to the college about Tom Mesaros. There should be introductions
– Dawn Vinberg, Laura Rehrmann in the Foundation, and the new Dean of HOPE,
Cathy Otto.

forward more about how to ensure we have a diverse faculty. His successes are
significant in the past.

Deans discussed their thoughts about if the President’s Cabinet model should be
revived as a communication committee.
A Dean talked about the desire to have more than one instructional representative at the
senior leadership team.

There is one faculty position available due to a retirement. Bob wants the Dean Team
to put together their requests for full-time faculty positions so we can discuss and
prioritize those using enrollment and waitlist data. Deans will provide this information
by January 5. Decisions should be aimed at strategic interests of the college and it
needs to be transparent.
Susan reported there is STEM money from the state that will be used specifically for an
Engineering position.

Student Interaction. It would be good to also keep track of phone calls and emails
from Christmas through New Year’s as well as keep track of faculty coming through.
The rest of the college may be very quiet, but not Health Occupations. We cannot
require staff to take vacation time. This is the Administration thinking about how we
move forward – that is why we are collecting data.
a. Orientation. Bob said the Student Success Coordinating Committee (SSCC)
will meet once a month commencing January. They are not a decision making
body, but will work to oversee and be a coordinating body. There will be
subgroups – one will be aimed at orientation. Kim is putting a structure
together. She requested a list of all different orientations from the divisions.
Some pieces are obviously self-contained. She will find common and distinct
pieces. If you look at orientation pages from other schools, they have
categories you can click on. They define terms in higher education for
students. Kim would like input on what programs you have coming out of
your divisions. Kim is going through the CAS Standards to see which learning
outcomes apply to SCC. Our goal is for students to be successful whatever

they came here for. Orientation is a critical piece to helping students get in
and stay in.
b. Success Coach. Ann will be putting out a Success Coach for online students.
We have Navigators – they are people tied to getting people through school to
a job. But now we are using the same concept and move them over to the
transfer and general education side. Bob asked Ann to share electronically the
definition she has of a Success Coach. Ann said online students have the
lowest retention rates, so this is a strategy around that. She developed a
position description based on the Navigator positions and discussions with
Spokane Falls who has a coach. A lot of schools are beginning to use this
tactic to increase retention.
