DUNMORE, Emma
The article presents information on a research conducted by Emma Dunmore, head of psychology at
Harrogate Grammar School in North Yorkshire, England, according to which students who are given
rewards for good work often lose interest in learning. Dunmore found that rewards, such as stickers
and sweets, could help improve behaviour only in the short term. It was found that pupils who failed
to meet the standard necessary for a reward lost motivation completely. INSET: Performance praise.
