North Carolina Alphabet Scrapbook All Fourth Graders in Mrs. Strother's class this year will be required to put together a scrapbook about North Carolina. The development of this scrapbook will allow students to learn many wonderful details about the state in which we live. Each student will create a scrapbook containing all of the letters of the alphabet. Students can choose from the possible topics listed below. For example, the letter "S" could stand for "Sanford". The letter "S" would be displayed on the page, then a paragraph and picture (s) would accompany the letter. The paragraph must include a developed topic sentence with 3-5 supporting details and a concluding sentence. Possible Topics: *NC symbols *NC lighthouses *the three regions of the state *natural resources *places to visit *cultural events or activities *geography and land forms *government *famous people from the state *college/universities Materials Needed From Home: *1/2" Clearview binder (Clearview works best so students can create a cover page.) *plastic sheet protectors for putting finished pages into *cardstock or copy paper for creating each page *4 X 6 note cards for topic paragraphs *pictures/graphics of topics *glue stick *scrapbook materials to be creative with FAQs Answered: *Due Dates: February 17, 2012- Any 6 letters March 14, 2012- Any 7 letters April 25, 2012- An 6 letters May 23, 2012- Remaining 7 letters, Finished project due *Each entry must have a clearly displayed letter, a student created and written paragraph explaining in detail the relation of the letter to our state. *A bibliography must be presented as a page in the scrapbook ( I will provide an organizer for students to keep track of the references used.) *Supporting graphics should be carefully hand drawn, magazine or paper cut outs, internet pictures , or photographs. *Materials presented must be neatly arranged, glued, colored, and/or illustrated on the page. *A cover page and table of contents is to be completed and placed at the front of the book before the final due date. (Students should wait until the final due date for this piece.) This project is primarily an independent one to be completed at home but some school time will be set aside to research our state, take notes and cite sources correctly. This project is a great way to learn research steps, time management and to be creative in showing what they know about our state. Please encourage your child to work on this project on days where homework is light. Students also have the opportunity to use school computers and the library. Students cannot wait until the last minute to work on this. This project will require steady and regular progress in order to meet the deadlines, so please us time wisely. Late work will not be accepted. Please let me know by this Friday what required supplies you may need assistance with so that I may help your child to be prepared for the project. Please encourage your child to bring up any questions they may have during class so that I can provide feedback as they progress on their project. Please sign and return so that I know you are aware of this project. This paper will be returned for reference throughout the duration of this project. A copy of this project can also be found in the Documents link on my website.
