Friday, October 2, 2015 – Mr. Schnell’s 4th Grade
Hi Parents,
Here are the latest happenings in Room 8.
Field Trip to Lansing - A permission slip came home last week for our trip to
the capitol on Thursday, November 5. As soon as we receive approval of ichat
forms, I will notify parents who will accompany us on the trip. A copy of the
permission slip can be found on our classroom website.
Open House – Will be held next week Tuesday, October 6. K-2 teachers will
present curriculum information from 5:30 – 6:15. Immediately following, the
PTA sponsored fun run will begin at 6:15 and end at 6:45. The school will also be
open at this time for families to visit and see the new upgrades to Roosevelt.
Finally, grades 3-4 will present their curriculum information at 7:00. Please plan
to attend!
Fun Run – The fun run will be the only PTA fund raiser this year, so please plan
on participating. For the first $50 in donations that your family collects, you will
receive 3 entries for the Grand Prize drawing – a trip to Kalahari Waterpark
Resort! For every $25 after that, your family will receive 2 additional entries to
the drawing. All pledges must be turned in by Friday, October 9th to be eligible
for the drawing.
Reading – Students working on visualizing and making inferences as they read.
To make an inference, we take what we read + what we know in our head, then
come up with a new thought or conclusion.
Writing – Students finished their drafts of their personal narratives. Next week,
we’ll do some revising and editing.
Word Study – Our next spell check is on Wednesday, October 7th. Remember,
students not only need to learn the spelling of each word, but they also need to
know which category each word would fit.
Math – Students are learning to read large numbers and to find data landmarks
like the maximum, minimum, range, mode and median. Ask your child the
different ways we found the median for a set of numbers, and ask why the mean
is so mean!
Science – Students were able to get up close and personal with our snails and
guppies this week. Ask your child to think of an animal, name a physical
characteristic of that animal, and describe how that characteristic helps the
animal to survive.
Social Studies – We studied the three branches of government – the legislative,
executive and the judicial. We remember the legislative makes laws; the
executive sounds like a top dog, so we think of the governor and how enforces
the law; and the judicial reminds us of Judge Judy, and that’s the court
system.
Friday Folder – The green Friday folder comes home again today with your
child’s graded work. Please review and have your child make corrections to any
assignment for which s/he would like a better grade. Corrections should be
done on a separate piece of paper and stapled to the original.
Where in the World is Mr. Schnell? – I will be out of the classroom on the
following days:
 Tuesday, October 6 – all day for a committee meeting
 Thursday, October 15 – literacy meeting
