FIELD TRIP Our field trip to the Nelson Atkins Museum of Art is scheduled for the morning of Friday, January 23rd. Students will need to wear their walking shoes that day as we will be visiting several places throughout the museum. We will leave at 9:15 AM and we’ll return to school around 12:30 PM. Students will need to bring a sack lunch and drink that day to eat in the classroom when we return. The permission slip for this trip was sent home with your child today. Please sign and return it on Tuesday, Jan. 20th. Thank you! Classroom Barter Experience Today your child came home with a note about this activity. Students will need permission to bring one item to school that he/she no longer wants or needs and is willing to trade (book, small toy, doll, bracelet, etc.). This item will need to be in the “marketplace” (school) on Thursday, Jan. 22nd for our learning experience. Donuts with Dad “Donuts with Dad” will be on Thursday, February 5th from 7am to 8:00am. Come enjoy a tasty breakfast with your father or grandfather. MULTIPLICATION Thank you for continuing to help your child practice multiplication facts at home. Students should have the set of flash cards they received inside the pencil pouch in their binder. Rememberwww.multiplication.com is a fun site full of math fact practice games for kids. Recalling multiplication facts quickly will help with other math skills such as division, fractions, and problem solving. Chat-N-Chew! Thanks to the many students who signed up to participate in this parent-lead program! The students’ first time to meet will be on Thursday, Feb. 19th. They are welcome to bring a sack lunch or order a school lunch that day. I hope they enjoy their first book! Ms. Boyer’s Class, Brougham Next week... Reading: We will read about one of my favorite subjects - CHOCOLATE! - in the story “Cocoa Ice”. Ask your child how Cocoa and Ice are related in this text. We will be working on comparing and contrasting subjects/ideas within text. We will look at specific clues in the text to help us with this skill. Writing: We will finish our persuasive essays next week. It’s been very interesting to read the students’ ideas! Be prepared when they bring home their final copies – they are coming up with some good arguments! After our guidance lesson on Tuesday we will begin our Guiding Principles essays. Math: Next week we will complete our unit on understanding fractions and we will take our Topic 9 test. Then we will begin comparing fractions. Remember- you can access all of the lessons as well as the textbook and tools for learning online at www.pearsonsuccessnet.com. Social Studies: Next week we will talk about trade and imports and exports. This is a wonderful way to make connections with our story “Cocoa Ice”. We will also identify and discuss opportunity cost as well as the importance of making good decisions with money regarding spending, saving, and using credit. Spelling: We will be studying words with /k/ and /kw/ sounds next week. Our test will be on Thursday, January 22nd.
