History of Art – a guide to volunteering
The Volunteering Services Unit exists to help UCL students get involved in volunteering
activities in the local community. We have over 500 different projects on offer, including lots
of one-off events where you don't need to make a regular commitment.
This sheet is a taster of some of the opportunities on offer – you can find plenty more at

Students tell us that through volunteering they’ve discovered London, felt more at home,
and made new friends. It can also help you find paid work and gain useful experiences.

FRIENDS OF THE HUNTLEY ARCHIVES AT LONDON METROPOLITAN ARCHIVES
ARTS AND HERITAGE AMBASSADORS
Friends of the Huntley Archives are looking for a volunteer to be provide a welcome point
service to the No Colour Bar: Black British Art in Action exhibition at the
Guildhall Art Gallery.
This will entail greeting visitors, invigilating exhibitions, ensuring safety of collections,
conducting ‘highlight’ tours and being an advocate for the Gallery’s activities. This varied
role would be ideally suited to an individual with enthusiasm for the Gallery, an interest in
history, the arts and cultural heritage and with good customer service skills.
The volunteer will receive induction training as well as receiving development support such
as workshops on public speaking; knowledge sharing days with other volunteers and
behind the scenes tours of the Guildhall Art Gallery.
MOVEMENT FOR HOPE
FILMMAKERS/VIDEOGRAPHERS
Help Movement for Hope Charity with a major dance project video footage, which involves
filming and post-editing. This post includes post-editing for videos and adding the
necessary creative aspects, spending five- ten hours in total in a short space of one month
for the assigned deliverables.
We’re looking for someone who is reliable, has good attention to detail, time management
and a willingness to travel around London. The position is ideally suited to students in the
major of arts or media, but candidates from other disciplines who have a strong interest or
some background in post-editing/production are welcome.
We will brief the volunteers about this specific project and help them understand the final
film production process that we use. We also want students to contribute their ideas in the
projects in line with the aim of the final product or a new piece of work.

THE BAYTREE CENTRE
ART CLUB VOLUNTEER
The Baytree Centre are looking for volunteers to lead art classes to young girls, planning
lessons and helping to design a syllabus that will encourage girls to express
themselves through art.
Volunteering 1-3 hours per week, the volunteer will need to be dependable in meeting time
commitments, have good interpersonal skills and an ability to motivate the girls to set their
own goals and to achieve them.
We are looking for volunteers who are enthusiastic, committed, and patient! By being one of
these enthusiastic volunteers you would be part of a worthwhile organization, contribute
positively to the community, and learn new skills!
INTOUNIVERITY
MENTOR
Be a part of IntoUniversity’s Mentoring Scheme, helping young people from disadvantaged
backgrounds to raise their aspirations and achieve their potential.
As a Mentor, you would support us with this aim and help to ensure that the background
young people are born into doesn’t affect their life chances by meeting with your Mentee for
two hours a month until the end of March and planning mentoring sessions in advance, with
the support of IntoUniversity staff.
EALING MENCAP
REAL ME VOLUNTEER
Real Me is a service for people with learning disabilities that offers a pathway for people to
develop life skills, take part on unique opportunities and work towards employment. They
are looking for volunteers to support our customers in their one to one and group sessions.
You can take part in our exciting sessions from creative arts, healthy living, sports,
horticulture, music and many more! We’re looking for someone who is sensitive to the
needs of others, has good listening/communication skills and an ability to use their initiative.
The role would involve working 3-5 hours per week in the community and in our centre in
Ealing.
HOLBORN COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION
AFTER SCHOOL ACTIVITY SUPPORTER
Volunteer with Holborn Community Association, supporting the delivery of after-school
pottery/ceramics activities and motion animation classes for primary school children.
The individual will use their interest in ceramics and computer-animation techniques to
assist the activity leader and encourage children to engage with these different art forms.
This role would be great for someone with patience, who enjoys working with children and
is able to make a regular commitment to volunteering.
