WRITING-12/13 COURSE II ESSENTIAL UNIT 1 (E01) (Grammar) (July 2014) Unit Statement: In this unit the student will master the conventions of capitalization and end mark punctuation, as well as grammar usage. The unit will be engaged concurrently with other units. It will be considered a 1 or 2 day per week unit. Essential Outcomes: (must be assessed for mastery) 1. The Student Will demonstrate through application the correct usage of definite and indefinite articles, nouns, prepositions, pronouns, noun-pronoun antecedent, adjectives and adverbs. (Writing Coach 293-312, 325A-354, 525-527) 2. TSW demonstrate through application correct subject-verb agreement. (WC 511A-524) 3. TSW demonstrate through application the correct usage of verbs. (WC 313A-324) 4. TSW demonstrate through application the correct usage of periods, question marks, exclamation marks, quotation marks, underlining, italics, commas, colons, semicolons, dashes, hyphens, ellipses, apostrophes, parentheses, brackets and capitalization. (WC 550 580, 593-626) 5. TSW differentiate clauses (dependent/independent) and phrases (noun, verb, prepositional, adverbial, adjectival). (WC 137, 397A-423) 6. TSW will differentiate sentence structures: simple, compound, complex, compound complex. (WC 424-428) Introduced Outcomes: (taught, not assessed) 1. The Student Will differentiate sentence types: declarative, interrogative, exclamatory and imperative. 2. TSW recognize common contractions. 3. TSW recognize common transition words. 4. The Student Will use a thesaurus, dictionary or other source to improve personal vocabulary. 2. TSW identify and correct any spelling errors discovered during the proofreading portion of The Writing Process. 3.
