See you then at the seminar, Best, Tak ATTACHMENT I From: "Jspvk (Jerry Spivack)" <jspvk@aol.com> Subject: Final Reminder: Wednesday, March 28 meeting Knowledge, Technology, and Social Systems seminar Date: March 25, 2012 12:24:26 AM EDT COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY SEMINAR on KNOWLEDGE, TECHNOLOGY, and SOCIAL SYSTEMS (formerly COMPUTERS, MAN and SOCIETY) As our next speaker for the Spring 2012 term, Dr. Thomas Mensah, will address the Knowledge, Technology, and Social Systems Seminar at Columbia University, on Wednesday, March 28, 7 pm, at Columbia University’s Faculty House. Dr. Thomas Mensah will speak to us on: IMPACT OF FIBER OPTICS: A KEY ENABLING TECHNOLOGY FOR THE 21ST CENTURY The average user of a cell phone today can access the Internet and surf the worldwide web in a manner unimagined twenty years ago. This is the result of the development of Fiber Optics which allows worldwide participation in the interactive global community, regardless of geography. This innovation has impacted political and social events and allowed real time video streaming, interactivity, as well as up to the minute news reporting that is changing print and television media. This convergence of video, telephone, and television, which was celebrated 15 years ago, has given way to a new paradigm shift focusing on the convergence of computing at the chip level, connectivity supported by fiber optics, and cloud computing which is based on data storage in the cloud. This presentation will examine in detail the quantum leap in manufacturing innovation in Fiber Optics that was necessary in 1985, and led to the spread of fiber optics throughout the world – providing the platform to support the World Wide Web as we know it today. Key patents that resolved the bottleneck in high speed fiber optics manufacturing and coating processes will be discussed. Fiber Optics has transformed the world as we know it, impacting high speed internet, and creating the platform that has allowed for the rise of modern companies like Facebook, Google, YouTube, Amazon, Twitter, etc., as well as supporting new iconic products like iPhone, iPad, iTunes, eBooks, etc. This technology has transformed banking, education, and the delivery of healthcare and entertainment in modern society. Future innovation in technology that supports mobility will also be discussed in relation to the challenges that must be overcome: including ultra light highly efficient energy storage systems for cell phones, laptops and other portable devices based on Nanotechnology. New and Future Directions for Technological Innovation in the global community will be highlighted. Dr. Thomas Mensah is a Fiber Optics Innovator, a Fellow of the AIChE Foundation, and an Associate Fellow of the AIAA. A more complete biography is ATTACHED, as well as a map showing DIRECTIONS to Columbia University’s Faculty House.
