Dear Robb:
(1) Many thanks for your msg (ATTACHMENT I) in response to our following list distribution;
(08/28/07) (1) Not attending ICT-Learn2007 conference in Cairo, Egypt, (2) "World Conference of
Education Administration" in Dubai in October, 2007, and (3) 10th Global Leadership Forum in
Novosibirsk, Siberia next year.

(2) It was my great pleasure to have met with you and Rev. Welty yesterday afternoon — thanks to your kind introduction to him.
(3) When you will be in Romania/Bucharest, you may contact the following person;
Dr. Mircea Malitza
President
The Black Sea University Foundation
50, Primaverii Blvd.
Bucharest-1
Romania
+40-1-222-4118
Fax: +40-1-222-4118

Fax: +40-1-411-2601
And
Silviu Jora

Black Sea University Foundation
13,Calea 13 Septembrie, 7 th floor
Bucharest 5, ROMANIA
tel/fax: +401 411 2601
bsu@sunu.rnc.ro
Colette Mazzucelli kindly introduced them to me, and I met Dr. Malitza in Manhattan in November of 1997. He indicated his strong interest in
joining our GUS project at that time. When you meet him, pls ask him his paper about the comparison of civilization and culture, which he
gave to me, but alas, I lost it — it was an excellent paper. We did a videoconference with Silviu in May 1998.
(4) You mentioned of Chili.
Mr. Juan Somavia, DG of International Labor Organization (ILO), came from Chili, and you and I met together at the meeting when he
introduced the report on globalization of his ILO at the Church Center at the UN Plaza on 9/23rd of 2004.
He is a very close friend of Prof. Tapio Varis, the Acting President of our GUS, and you can find his paper in PART I of our book, which I
showed to you — see also Item (10) below;
Juan Somavia, DG of ILO
"Exploring the High Road to Technology and Globalization"

(5) Referring to your need of the HIV/AIDS education program in Romania, I would suggest that you may contact Susan Witte. I have been
using her multimedia web teaching material as an example for the need of broadband Internet;
(a) http://ccnmtl.columbia.edu/presentations/connect/nimh/preview.html
(b) http://ccnmtl.columbia.edu/triangle/projects/multimedia_connect_an_aids_int.html -- click on video session for
HIV/AIDS education.
I hope that this is to be available especially via wireless <http://preview.tinyurl.com/2wm2qk> in even developing countries;
My hope is that such program is to be included in a CD or DVD, and a cadre would bring it and show to local people with his laptop while
accessing to the Columbia University web site as well, if possible.
(6) About the broadband Internet, Romania already has two 622 Mbps lines, so that they would not have much trouble for multimedia web
teaching as well as videoconferencing — see the following diagram <http://tinyurl.com/2vs9o6>;
However, there may need to have a broadband Internet ring connecting peripheral countries around Black Sea (including central Asian
countries), as similar to GLOLRIAD <http://www.gloriad.org/> and <http://preview.tinyurl.com/33yl57>;
Dear Greg:
Many thanks for your recent msg (ATTACHMENT II). Yes, we would like to have your great help, since you have a
solid track record of creating GLORIAD, and we will be sure to approach you when things get more confirmed. BTW,
while you are visiting your colleagues in various countries, pls feel free to promote our GUS to them.
(7) About WHO, pls visit Item (4) of the following list distribution — particularly on their intention to help developing countries on the
construction of a national policy on e-healthcare system;
(08/07/07) Creation of GUS/Kenya for e-learning and e-healthcare/telemedicine
http://preview.tinyurl.com/3ygqk4
(8) Pls have a very pleasant and successful trip to Romania. Pls feel free to contact me if you have any further questions, though I have
previously informed you on the steps how to create the GUS/Romania — according to the Section IX, Action Plan of the following paper;
Al-Azab, M. and T. Utsumi, (2007), "Creation of Global University System in Egypt (GUS/Egypt)," Paper for
"ICT-Learn 2007" conference in Cairo, Egypt, September 2 to 4, 2007
http://preview.tinyurl.com/ypkaqo
I look forward to receiving your favorable info after your coming back in the end of September.
Dear Rev. Welty and Robb:
(9) Many thanks for your valuable time yesterday afternoon for my visit to describe our Global University System (GUS) project. The
conversations were very interesting and fruitful.
(10) The book I showed to you can be accessed at;

These could be real evidences of Senator Fulbright’s words;
“Learning together and working together are
the first steps towards attaining global peace.”
Our GUS project is to create an environment, which will foster
friendship and comradeship among youngsters around the world, with
hands-on constructive learning and creation of new knowledge in the
Knowledge Age of the 21st century.

As said during our mtg, this fund is specially for k-12 education and for NGO, and would provide up to $100,000/application.
You can obtain its application procedures at the nearby Japanese consulate and/or embassy.
(12) About Nicaragua, the following person once approached me in 1995 to create her Protestant University with e-learning distance
education;
Ms. Rosa Capella Hodgson
Internat, Relations Delegate
Nicaraguan Protestant University

I sat at a lunch table next each other with Mr. John Negroponte at Cosmos Club in Washington DC — he was a senior V.P. of McGraw-Hill
Publishing Company at that time. He assured his help to us when we would create GUS/Nicaragua, since he was once an Ambassador to
Nicaragua. I gave him a copy of our aforementioned book at the occasion of Bangladesh national day at the Bangladesh Ambassador’s party
when he was the US Ambassador to the UN. (As you may know, he is a brother of Prof. Negroponte at MIT who is now advocating $100
laptop for children in developing countries with One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) project.)
As mentioned to you at our mtg, we are promoting a similar inexpensive laptop of INK Media <http://tinyurl.com/3dh45a>, too — this was
mentioned in our following list distribution;
(04/03/07) WiKipedia type open-source courseware
http://preview.tinyurl.com/33lgy8
(13) I took the liberty of admitting you into our list so that you will be kept updated with our daily progress. Pls enjoy reading it.
Keep in touch.
Best, Tak

Prof. Utsumi,
Thank you for your response and advice about an outpost for GUS in Bucharest/Romania/Southeast Europe
I do plan to be in Bucharest and across Romania [particularly in Sibiu] from Sept. 12 [leaving JFK-NYC Sept. 11] to Sept. 23 making
contacts, including for Church World Service/National Council of Churches, Columbia University Earth Institute/Division of Sustainable
Urban Communities and the New York Academy of Medicine, as well as the International Division of the American Public Health
Association, Global Health Watch, The International Journal of Health Services, Cornell University Departments of City & Regional
Planning and Economics.
I shall treasure your further immediate advice -- and that of others associated with your unique GUS global network -- regarding
contacts and program developments in that region.
As a health systems development specialist I am very responsive to your suggestions of HIV/AIDS programming, Telemedicine, and
other health systems improvement issues and technical assistance. We are aware of a uniquely acute HIV/AIDS epidemic in Romania,
reportedly due to inadequate/contaminated needles. I shall be deeply grateful for other epidemiological or policy-programmatic
information, concerns, and interests in this region, obviously particularly involving health systems.
Perhaps we should have an in-person meeting at our convenience before my departure Sept. 11. I am reachable best on my cell
phone anytime at 917-318-7908.
Sincerely, Salud & Solidarity,

Hi Tak, I'm not sure what happened but glad it's working.
I'm in China at moment until september 5 (and then in
Korea, Moscow, Prague until September 19) but should
be in pretty good email reach throughout trip - just a bit
slower than usual sometimes.
I'd sure like to talk with you one of these days about our
plans for extending access to GLORIAD to underserved

regions and things we might be able to do with you in
this regard. After all these many years of correspondence,
I'll be glad if we can do some work together.
Best wishes from a sunny (and hot) Beijing!
