See the campus map in Reference (d) above. (2) I hope you will enjoy listening Dr. Herren’s talk after we had wonderful presentations by Prof. Victor B. Lawrence of Stevens Institute of Technology and the Chairman of Baharicom Development Company about the “Technology for the Other 3-4 Billion Inhabitants” in the evening of February 15th (Reference (e) above), and Dr. Thomas Mensah of Georgia Aerospace System in Atlanta, GA, on “Impact of Fiber Optics: A Key Enabling Technology For The 21st Century” in the evening of March 28th (Reference (f) above). (3) We had a very productive mtg at the Stevens Institute of Technology on March 29th (Reference (g) above) on the creation of Global Early Warning System (GEWS) in the Economic Community Of West African States (ECOWAS) member countries along the west coast of African continent in cooperation of; (a) Global Ring for Advanced Applications Development (GLORIAD) <http://www.gloriad.org/>, (b) Baharicom Development Company <http://tinyurl.com/3hlrlp3>, (c) Georgia Aerospace System/Lightwave and Wireless Systems <www.georgiaaerospace.com>. We will be reported about this mtg here in a few days. (4) We plan to construct socio-economic-energy-environment system dynamic simulation models of those ECOWAS countries, and then to interlink them for the policy analysis for the co-prosperity among those countries with the help of Hans’ Millennium Institute — BTW, they have already constructed the one for Nigeria. See you then at the seminar, Best, Tak ATTACHMENT I From: "Jspvk (Jerry Spivack)" <jspvk@aol.com> Subject: Wednesday, April 18 - Knowledge, Technology, and Social Systems seminar Date: April 3, 2012 1:28:27 AM EDT COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY SEMINAR on KNOWLEDGE, TECHNOLOGY, and SOCIAL SYSTEMS (formerly COMPUTERS, MAN and SOCIETY) As our next speaker for the Spring 2012 term, Dr. Hans R. Herren, will address the Knowledge, Technology, and Social Systems Seminar at Columbia University, on Wednesday, April 18, 7 pm, at Columbia University’s Faculty House. Dr. Hans Herren will speak to us on: WORLD DEVELOPMENT PROBLEMS: YOU CANNOT SOLVE THESE PROBLEMS WITH THE SAME THINKING THAT CREATED THEM Abstract: UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon lamented four years ago, that only a few countries would meet the Millennium Development Goals by 2015. And now, in addition, the global economic crisis is further increasing the hurdles for low-income countries everywhere. Compounding these problems are the growing risks from climate change, which demand more effective planning tools to make sure that the financial support is used more efficiently to assure progress towards meeting the MDGs and similar national goals. Fortunately, such tools are available. The Millennium Institute (MI) has created a system dynamics based model to help developing countries design, test, implement and evaluate their development strategies. Over the last two decades, MI has worked with partners in Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean to develop their capacity to build and use scenario-based models to prepare long-term national roadmaps for sustainable development and inform supportive policies that address the MDGs, economic growth, climate change, and post conflict peacebuilding, in a comprehensive, systemic and holistic manner. The MI approach involves looking into alternative future scenarios differing from those of the business- as-usual scenarios, to enable informed choices that optimize synergies and minimize or mitigate the unintended consequences of policy decisions. Within a single, integrated framework, the economic, the social, and the environmental impacts of decisions can be visualized and examined. These approaches, and their impact on the developing world, will be discussed at this seminar. In addition to this abstract, a more complete biography and photo of the speaker, Hans Herren, is ATTACHED, as well as a map showing DIRECTIONS to Columbia University’s Faculty House.
