Pediatrics is the specialty of medical science concerned with the physical, mental and social health of children from birth to young adulthood. Pediatric care encompasses a broad spectrum of health services ranging from preventive health care to the diagnosis and treatment of acute and chronic diseases The aims of the study of paediatrics is to reduce infant and child rate of deaths, control the spread of infectious disease, promote healthy lifestyles for a long disease-free life and help ease the problems of children and adolescents with chronic conditions. Paediatricians diagnose and treat several conditions among children including: Injuries Infections genetic and congenital conditions cancers organ diseases and dysfunctions 4 CHARACTERISTICS OF THIS CAREER A pediatrician is able to define accurately the child’s health status and to serve as a consultant and make us of other specialists as consultants as needed. A pediatrician participates at the community level in preventing or solving problems in child health care and publicly advocates the causes of children. Pediatricians working in academic institutions such as universities, medical schools and teaching hospitals teach and train others about medicine and pediatrics. 6 PROS AND CONS There are many advantages to having a pediatrician you can turn to throughout your child's life. When a doctor really knows your child; knows their complete medical history, their temperament and personality, how they react to pain and even what they're like at school and home, it helps them pinpoint health problems and recognize when something is "out of the ordinary." (14 years) -Most pediatricians work long hours. Sometimes they work at night. 7 JOB DUTIES Treats Illnesses: A large part of a pediatrician's job involves treating illnesses. These can be everything from everyday illnesses such as colds and strep throat, childhood diseases such as measles, mumps and chicken pox. A pediatrician examines the patient, orders tests if needed, analyzes test results, diagnoses the illness and decides on a treatment plan. Makes careful notes in the patient's chart of symptoms, diagnosis and treatment. Monitors Chronic Diseases: A pediatrician also sees patients who have chronic diseases such as juvenile diabetes and cystic fibrosis.
