Course Description:
Applicable to all clinical practice
settings and specialty areas, this
clinically practical course will present
the most essential responsibility of
physical therapists --- the recognition of
co-morbid medical conditions and the
diagnosis of movement-based
impairments. The content knowledge
and process skills necessary to enhance
physical therapists’ advanced medical
screening and clinical judgments
regarding diagnosis and when to treat,
and when to refer their patients will be
presented. Combined with physical
therapists’ existing knowledge and
skills, medical screening and differential
diagnostic competencies will provide a
more comprehensive evaluation scheme
that will facilitate safe, effective and
efficient patient management within the
context of a collaborative practice
paradigm. This is an evidenced-based
seminar on evaluative procedures to treat
a person without a referral.
Learning OBJECTIVES
1. Identify the role and
responsibility of Diagnosis
within physical therapy
practice.
2. Identify three different
diagnostic theories that
provide effective strategies for
effective clinical decision
making.
3. Analyze the diagnostic value
and individual characteristics
of clinical tests by defining
Sensitivity, Specificity, and
Likelihood Ratios.
4. Identify the value of subjective
examination, i.e. “History”, as
related to effective diagnosis
and management of patients.
5. Apply Medical Screening
techniques to traditional
examination procedures that
result in a comprehensive
examination scheme.
6. Recognize which features of
the History and Physical
Examination influence not only
intervention strategies but also
decisions about diagnostic
imaging, pharmacology,
laboratory testing, and
specialist referral.
7. Differentiate medical
conditions that contraindicate
physical therapy intervention
from medical conditions that
are appropriate for physical
therapy interventions.
8. Discuss signs and symptoms
that necessitate immediate
medical referral.
9. Identify medical conditions
that necessitate modification of
physical therapy interventions.
10. Practically apply medical
screening procedures in a
competent manner.
