Student Forum IV of the University of the 21st Century Thursday, 19 May 2015 Student Community Center Multi-Purpose Room 12:00 – 2:00 pm Imagine UC Davis in 50 years as the University of the 21st Century. Students would receive financial aid from the campus Decrease the need for one or two jobs Able to devote more time to their education Encourage participation in academic and extracurricular activities Become more involved in the campus Not be so stressed about their grades More shared governance on campus and UC Student input in structure of university governance Would like more involvement in programs More student representation on the Board of Regents Two students represent all the UC students Students don’t necessarily support the views of Student Regent Student regents are voted by the Board of Regents Students need a platform to get engaged with the campus Orientation would be the first opportunity for students to get to know the campus All the various clubs and groups should invite participation Students need to be made aware of the services available to students Besides extracurricular sports and organizations, there should be awareness of physical and mental health sources and information Information should also be provided about Davis and the surrounding region Important for the students to feel comfortable on campus Organizations should encourage students to join committees on campus More student involvement Academics and faculty are important to the students Students need to have more access to professors To keep students aware of class assignments and materials on line Professors need to encourage good scholarship by students Students need to know where to look for assistance for academic skills Classrooms in 50 years More electronic technology in classroom and personal use Your phone will be even more multi-dimensional Lectures may not be done by a professor Classrooms may not be held in buildings There will be more interactive discussions on many levels 1 There will be sophisticated electronic technology to bring world events to the classroom It will be important to maintain the interaction between professors and students Research will be incredible with data being gathered from all over the world Internships in a variety of businesses and locations Less bureaucracy There will be an abundance of choices for a course of study Even the ability to design your own major Importance of greater communication in building a sense of community in the university 2
